Spelopede cocoon

Spelopede cocoon

A stasis cocoon containing a spelopede.

When conditions are inhospitable, insects sometimes form stasis cocoons and burrow underground. These cocoons keep insects safe from fire, extreme temperatures, and other threats for years.

Pollutants can stimulate cocoons and cause them to resurface, and strong pollutants can attract cocoons from great distances.

Cocoons do nothing if they are not disturbed. If a cocoon is disturbed or destroyed, the insect within will awaken and attack, triggering other nearby cocoons in the process.

Spelopede cocoon is a dormant insectoid cocoon that spawns as part of the wastepack infestation event.

Summary

All insectoid cocoons share the following traits: they always start dormant, have a wake up radius of 4.9 tiles; for any target within this radius, and the same for buildings constructed within this radius, can only target humans, and spawn with the Cocoon Disturbed mental state. They have a wake up delay range of 162 ticks, can be awoken by other disturbed cocoons in a maximum radius of 3 tiles, and have a delay range of 30 - 60 ticks in sending this disturbed signal to awaken other cocoons. The cocoons themselves also heal once per every 6000 ticks, and spawn with 10 slime filth in a 1 tile radius, spawning additional filth with a MTB of 4 hours.

Wastepack infestations use raid points like many other threats, and thus the composition and size of the cocoons will depend on this. Spelopede cocoons have a combat power of 75, the same as the insectoid contained within.

Analysis

Unlike normal infestations which will spawn around overhead mountain, wastepack infestations target recently polluted tiles instead, which can prove more harmless if they are a sufficient distance away, and since they are initially dormant, won't cause any destruction and can be dealt with at any time. Wastepack infestations never spawn with hives and so will never reproduce, nor will they produce Insect jelly. Setting restrictive zones several tiles beyond the trigger radius of the cocoons will prove beneficial, as pawns traveling diagonally may accidentally trigger them, especially when leaving or entering the map with pack animals during a caravan, as the animals will be bunched up and trailing behind the pawn leading them, causing some to walk into or get pushed into the trigger radius.
