Slate is a natural structure that can be mined to obtain a 
Slate 
stone chunk. Do note that this is not a guarantee.
Summary
Slate tiles have 500 health each, being the middle point of health between rock tiles. Each mined block has ~25% chance base to yield a slate stone chunk, each of which can be transform into 20 slate blocks.
This tile can also be smoothed to create Smoothed slate.
