Materials
Renewables
Wood
Logs are gathered from trees using the Chop Wood command and are vital to early game construction. In addition to the initial wood you are given at the start of the game, you can also plant trees inside growing zones to create a renewable source of wood, though this tends to take over a month of in-game time before they can be harvested. Bulk goods traders will also buy and sell wood.
Minerals
Silver
Used for trading. Silver is used for trading with traders, however each trader has a limited stock you can buy from. Silver is used to buy slaves, resources, and weapons. Additionally, traders will buy resources relevant to their specialization. Industrial Traders will buy silver, uranium, metal and wooden planks, Combat Traders will buy weapons, and Food Traders will buy food. Silver in great quantity is among the wreckage at the start of the game. After this silver is depleted, additional silver may only be obtained through random drops, trading or mining silver deposits.
Steel
Used for advanced construction Steel is the primary resource for mid to late game construction, and is therefore vital. Without steel, you cannot build new power generators, conduits, batteries, temperature regulators like coolers and heaters, or turrets and sandbags, so ensure that you have a steady supply. Steel appears at your crash site when a new game is started. After this steel is exhausted, it can be obtained through random drops, trading, mining, disassembling mechanoids, or melting slag into useable steel at an electric smelter. Steel can be mined from minerals, which are found in mineral veins in the mountains. Industrial traders also buy and sell steel.
Plasteel
Generally considered the strongest material in the game. Used for a lot of high tech stuff, especially spaceship modules, which are needed to win the game. Can be obtained by trading, disassembling mechanoids, or by mining compacted plasteel deposits.
Gold
A very beautiful and expensive resource. Can sometimes be found off the bodies of raiders, as well as those who pop out of random cryptosleep caskets in buildings around the map, but the primary source is gold veins. You can sell gold to certain traders to get a staggering amount of cash, or craft it into golden sculptures that are perhaps the most valuable items in the game. It can also be used to create extremely beautiful furniture and structures that will help obtain that coveted "Beautiful Environment" mood bonus for your colonists, though this may be wasteful unless you are swimming in cash already and don't need much extra.
Uranium
Uranium can be traded for profit or used to build cryptosleep caskets. It is also a main component in spaceship reactor modules, which are required to win the game.
Stone
Used for stone construction
Stone is produced from rock rubble via a Stonecutter's table after it is researched. To create stone right click the table, click 'Bills', and use the + and - buttons to set how many pieces of rubble you wish to consume. You must have a colonist with 'crafting' enabled in the Overview menu. Stone can also be obtained by deconstructing abandoned structures that are randomly scattered throughout the map.
Cut stone (stone cutting research and workbench that uses slag chunks) can be used to supplement other valuable resources, namely steel and wood.
Cut stone can be used to craft walls (even the conduit walls that carry electricity), or fancy floors with faster than default walk speed and less mood penalty. Cut stone can be used to craft everything from doors, automatic doors, tables, benches, to beds and royal beds. Template:Clr Types of stone blocks(Alphabetical Order):
