In RimWorld a base is a central location or place where colonists sleep, haul metal/food and research.
Why are bases important
A base is important, because colonists need a safe area where they are not in immediate danger of being killed or incapacitated. A well organized base will allow colonists to perform routine tasks with minimal travel and backtracking.
Types of bases
There are three types of bases: underground bases, open ground bases, and hybrid bases.
Underground bases are bases which have been built into a mountainside. The benefit of this is that enemies can only approach the base from its exterior entrance(s). This makes it highly defensible.
Open ground bases are built out in the open. The benefit of this is that they can be built anywhere, rather than requiring specific natural features to be built into. However, they require much more defending and and more susceptible to raiders attacks.
Hybrid bases have some features of the two previous styles, mixing and matching according to the builder's needs
