I'll relay here the thoughts I shared on the wiki channel over on discord.
I've taken a look at this article and I think it needs a big rework. I've taken notes on what I think is lacking or wrong about it. I consider that while most sections aren't wrong, there are sufficient reasons to consider a full rewrite and restructure. However, knowing the huge amount of info we're talking about, it most certainly be too much for a single person to handle, and I feel it would be better to do it in a coordinated manner. My noted thoughts as I read the article are as follows. I apologize if my comments are too harsh or missing anything:
- Lacking the most important lessons, which should be the very first part: general thinking and strategy against enemies. The core of all the good defensive and offensive plans talked here and in other articles is to divide the enemy force and keep them from doing damage back. In other words, creating and taking advantage of unfair situations for the enemy.
- Very long, not very palatable to read, specially for new players. More example images could be added. In general sections could be further/better structured for ease of reading.
- Specific tips on each raid type should probably be moved to the Raids article instead. It's a huge chunk of this page, while not explaining the general behavior of raiders that is mostly shared across factions and enemy type. (it is talked about under "Humanoid assaults" when it should be in a more general section, and it's also not very accurate either). It's also missing information on specific xenotype raiders. No explanation of breach raids other than the mechs and termites.
- Feels like information is quite all over the place. Thank goodness there's a contents index.
- I don't think the prison break section at the end belongs here, when there's a specific article on prisoners.
- A section talking about consumable items like rocket launchers, psychic lancers and pulsers could be added, with the message being: buy and loot these items and don't be afraid to use them, supported by some good use examples.
- Some outdated or inaccurate info:
-Body blocking: invisibility not blocking anymore. -Melee block: having doors in choke points and quirks with collision. Missing mini-gun's firing cycle issues when recommending against it. Grenades don't destroy walls if used correctly. -Dealing with rockets: while sending a bait for the rocket can work, stating that it is a necessary move to take feels like bad advice, specially when taking other options into account. Lacking other tactics that work without expending a pawn or rare resources. -Rescue: should be moved further down the article, not right in the middle of it, as it talks of the results of a fight. Missing tips related to crawling introduced in 1.5, which has relevant implications. Since the section talks about tending downed pawns on site, it would be good to advice on tending standing pawns as well if at risk of bleeding out. -Friendly fire: there's a picture on the wiki showing the minimum range, it should be used here. -Cover: there's no reason not to update the pictures and their description reflecting the updated cover values. Could also be remade in a much cleaner and controlled environment. -And there's more stuff that is either outdated or straight up bad advice (Environmental hazards for example).
Just correcting and updating each section is not going to fix the main issues, being the first ones I described. The best way to go about it would be to rework the structure of the whole article so it starts with the most generally applicable knowledge and getting specific later on. Details on each type of threat could also be made collapsible in a similar manner to the Events article.
