I agree it's a bit of a problem when a would-be editor clicks Edit on page, instead of seeing raw data, they're faced with some template or query they don't understand. They'll need some direction. Either a primer page that all new editors should read and/or a <!--comment--> on those pages directing them how to edit the data. For the most part an editor just needs to know that when they want to edit data for an item in a table or list, they need to go to the item's page.
As to who added the SMW extension I'd guess either Tynan himself or Zesty.
At the bottom of the Define template there's a line with {{{1}}} which calls the template named by the parameter. So calling the Plant template again is redundant, except it's the one that's actually showing the data. I'm pretty familiar with how those templates work so maybe soon I'll finally crack it.
However, I'm giving more priority to adding in things that are completely missing. So, I'm really glad to see someone adding in the room roles.
