Wool
Wools are a class of textiles obtained by handlers shearing tamed hairy animals. Such animals will slowly grow wool, the progress of which can be tracked in the animal's infobox. Once they reach 100%, handlers will shear these animals and leave the wool on the ground where sheared. You can avoid excessive hauling by zoning or penning your wool-bearing livestock close to your storage. You can keep track of wool development on the specimen infobox.
Compared to other textiles, wools typically provide excellent cold insulation, modest heat insulation, and comparatively poor armor, while also being easy to acquire in large quanities. The wool stats, yield, and shearing interval vary between different animals.
Acquisition
The following animals produce wool:
Animal | Wool Name | Wool Amount | Shearing Interval | Daily Wool Average |
---|---|---|---|---|
Alpaca | Alpaca wool | 45 | 10 | 4.5 |
Bison | Bison wool | 120 | 15 | 8 |
Megasloth | Megasloth wool | 200 | 20 | 10 |
Muffalo | Muffalo wool | 120 | 15 | 8 |
Sheep | Sheep wool | 45 | 10 | 4.5 |
Comparison table
The following wools are in game:
Name | Armor - Sharp Factor | Insulation - Cold (°C) | Insulation - Heat (°C) | Market Value |
---|---|---|---|---|
Alpaca wool | 0.36 | 30 | 16 | 3.8 |
Bison wool | 0.36 | 26 | 12 | 2.7 |
Megasloth wool | 0.8 | 34 | 12 | 2.7 |
Muffalo wool | 0.36 | 28 | 12 | 2.7 |
Sheep wool | 0.36 | 26 | 10 | 2.7 |
All wools have the following modifiers in common:
- Beauty Factor of 1.5.
- Max Hit Points Factor of 1.
- Flammability Factor of 1.7.
- Work To Make Factor and Work To Build Factor of 1.
- Armor - Blunt Factor of 0.
- Armor - Heat Factor of 1.1.
Descriptions
The remarkably soft wool of an alpaca. It is warm, protects well from heat, and fetches a high price.
Alpaca wool is a type of fabric gathered by animal handlers by shearing tamed alpacas. Alpaca wool is a very good insulator, and is therefore recommended in clothing like parkas and tuques.
Thick and coarse wool of a bison. Quite warm.
Bison wool is a type of fabric gathered by animal handlers by shearing tamed bison.
While somewhat coarse, megasloth wool's long fibers make it very strong. It is very warm.
Megasloth wool is a type of fabric gathered by animal handlers by shearing tamed megasloth. Megasloth wool is the second warmest textile in the game, after Guinea pig fur and tied with Thrumbofur, and is essential for colonies on cold biomes like sea ice and ice sheet. It can be hard to obtain lots of it as it takes quite a while for megasloths to produce the wool (usually only enough to make one parka) and it is rarely sold by traders.
Soft, light and provides very good insulation. Muffalo wool clothes can keep the body warm even in very cold conditions.
Muffalo wool is a type of fabric gathered by animal handlers by shearing tamed muffalos.
Sheep's wool. It provides good insulation.
Sheep wool is a type of fabric gathered by animal handlers by shearing tamed sheep.
Trivia
Contrary to wool in real life, wool in RimWorld is more flammable than cotton, rather than less.
