Creation
Steel slag chunks are a type of chunk created by the destruction of several different structures and objects. They provide cover and can be smelted at an Electric smelter for
15 steel.
Acquisition[edit]
| This article is a stub. You can help RimWorld Wiki by expanding it. Reason: What structures and exactly which pods create them, in what proportions.. |
Steel slag chunks are created from destroying certain buildings, raider's drop pods, and cargo pods event, but never the pods of orbital trader's or quest reward delivery.
Summary[edit]
Their primary use is to be smelted at an Electric smelter for
15 steel. This requires 400 ticks (6.67 secs) of work.
When targeted by the transmute steel
ability, a chunk will be transformed into 15 units of either twisted meat,
bioferrite,
gold, plasteel, or uranium, determined randomly.
Steel slag chunks also provide 50% cover.
Analysis[edit]
Steel slag chunks are a free, renewable soure of steel that can be harvested as soon as an electric smelter is built. There are many other sources of steel, so building a smelter and smelting chunks should not be immediately focused on unless playing on a map without ore (e.g., sea ice).
Smelting a steel slag chunk would take 26.7 ticks (0.45 secs) per 1 steel, which takes less time than mining or deep drilling. However, this does not take into account hauling time. Since drop pods usually land far away, it takes a long time to haul slag chunks back. Due to this, as well as the cost of the smelter -
170 Steel,
2 Components, requiring 12 chunks to break even - smelters are not terribly efficient and should not be built in the very early game. Still, smelters are a renewable source of steel, which will convert junk weapons/armor and chunks into a steady stream of steel, so they should be built once there is enough smeltable material on the map.
If you have a mechanitor,
then lifters and/or fabricors can be used to automate the hauling process.
Cover[edit]
As a chunk, it provides 50% cover, so should be cleared to a stockpile away from areas where enemies could use them. Conversely, they should be exploited when fighting field battles to provide cover to your own pawns. With its modestly high HP and non-flammability, it makes for more durable and rapidly deployable early cover than wooden barricades at the cost of providing 5% less cover.

- 1.3.3200 - Changed slag steel chunk mass from 5 to 8 so it doesn't weight less than the steel you get by smelting it.
