Dye

Dye comes from the tinctoria plant. It can be used to paint walls and other buildings or dye apparel and hair at the styling station

Acquisition[edit]

Dye is obtained by harvesting tinctoria plant. Each fully grown plant yields 1 before modifiers for Storyteller Harvest Yield and the harvesting pawn's Plant Harvest Yield. Note that by default, Storyteller Harvest Yield varies by difficulty.

Analysis[edit]

With Ideology, dying a pawn's clothes to match their preferred color will provide up to a +2 mood buff. While the actual impact of dye is minimal, using dye only requires a tiny amount of work, as clothes are not replaced often. A small field of tinctoria is all that's needed, and only a stack of dye or two should be kept in storage. Therefore, the only reasons not to dye clothes would be if the colony does not have the growing space to do so, such as on an ice sheet, or if the cost of the styling station cannot be afforded.

Otherwise, there is no mechanical benefit to dye beyond its selling value, although it can help make pawns and buildings easier to identify. As a cash crop, tinctoria is outclassed by cotton plants or any of the drug plants, which take longer to grow, but take much less time to sow/harvest and provides a much better yield.
