Silver is a precious, uncommon material. It is recognized as a trade currency which all traders will readily accept.
Acquisition[edit]
Tiles of silver ore can be found on any map, but must be mined before they can be used. Once you've completed the research necessary to construct a deep drill, it can also be found in midsize deposits underground.
All traders carry a significant amount of silver on them, and will happily trade it for your goods. Non-tribal raiders may carry silver with them when they attack.
Ore[edit]
Silver ore tiles have 1,500 health each, making them one of the faster ores to mine. They can be found in midsize veins, ranging from 4 to 12 tiles in size. Each mined block has a base yield of 40 silver, however this is modified by factors such as the Difficulty setting and the mining yield of the pawn.
Despite being literally made of RimWorld's currency, silver ore has the smallest monetary yield per tile of any ore. All other ores except compacted machinery have the same base yield of 40 per tile of ore but produce resources worth more than
1 each, while compacted machinery makes up for its much smaller yield with a significantly more valuable resource. However, silver as a currency is accepted by all traders at 100% value, and is lighter than most other metals.
Summary[edit]
Silver is the primary trade currency, also represented by dollars ($).
In the trade menu, it will always appear as the topmost item, separated from the rest of the items. It cannot be bought or sold directly, but buying other items will cost silver and selling items will give the colony silver. Traders will always carry a finite amount of silver, and if they owe more than they have, any excess items are given for free.[Goodwill?]
Usage[edit]
Silver can be used as a material for stuffable items with the Metallic stuff tag, however as a small volume material (SVM), you need x10 the silver as you would non-SVM materials.

Analysis[edit]
For trading, silver is useful as a light and universal currency. For example, not all traders buy dusters, but you can sell dusters for silver at a faction base and use that to buy goods. Silver specifically is also required for sterile tile, and less importantly, silver tile.
In extreme difficulties (Losing is Fun and higher), hoarding silver just because you might need it to buy a rare item is unwise, as the extra wealth will increase the difficulty of raids. This applies to all money making items, not just silver itself - see wealth management for details.
As a material[edit]
Silver is beautiful as furniture and art, but in most cases, it is more efficient to use jade instead. Jade buildings require half the market value (each jade is worth 5
, but requires 10x less materials) and are more beautiful than silver. Even when considering the colony trading disadvantage, buying jade for building is cheaper than using silver directly. Jade is heavier and not always available to buy, but if making silver buildings, it is likely that the colony is advanced enough to not worry about that.
Silver tiles do have the niche of taking up no space and having increased cleanliness, making them a strong option to boost room impressiveness when space is limited. They are also a fine floor
and competitive in that role, taking less work to make than fine stone tiles
, while being similar wealth to fine carpet
and nonflammable.
For weapons and armor, silver is equal to or worse than steel while being significantly more expensive.
