The sarcophagus is a building used to store a corpse and is an alternative burial method to the grave.
Acquisition[edit]
Sarcophagi can be constructed once the Complex furniture research project has been completed. Each requires
60 Stuff (Woody/Metallic/Stony, 600 for SVMs), 2,400 ticks (40 secs) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder and the work to build factor and offset of the material, and a construction skill of 5.
Once constructed, they cannot be re-installed; they can only be deconstructed.
Sarcophagi made of steel, granite, limestone, marble, sandstone and slate, can also spawn at map generation alongside other ruins.
Summary[edit]
| This section is a stub. You can help RimWorld Wiki by expanding it. Reason: burial mechanics, recreation mechanics, include Ideology effects.. |
The storage tab above the inspect pane can be configured to set what types of pawns can be buried in the selected sarcophagus. The default setting is colonists only.
The command icons (Copy settings, Paste settings) can be used to copy storage settings between sarcophagi and graves. Settings can also be copied to other containers like stockpile zones and dumping stockpile zones; however, settings that a sarcophagus doesn't have (i.e. food) will be copied as disallowed. The copy function can take settings from one container and apply them to many containers, when shift-click is used to select multiple.
A body can be removed from a grave with the 'Open' command, and will be done by a colonist assigned to hauling. A Unnatural corpse
that was buried will automatically get out on its own when offscreen.
The sarcophagus will gain an art piece related to the dead pawn on it [Unnatural corpses?] once a pawn has been interred into the sarcophagus. A room with sarcophagi will be classified as a tomb.
As sarcophagi can be placed in freezers to preserve their inhabitants, they are a good method for protecting the corpses of colonists waiting for resurrector mech serum from hungry animals and overly efficient butchers.
Organic corpses in sarcophagi will still be raised as a shambler
if the sarcophagus is exposed to deadlife dust,
opening and deposing the corpse next to the sarcophagus to undergo the usual raising process. The decay level of the corpse, or the type of organic pawn it was in life has no effect on whether it can successfully exit the sarcophagus. Corpses inside sarcophagi will not be raised by a death pall
however.
Meditation[edit]
Sacrophagi can be used as a Morbid meditation focus.
It has a base strength of +10% psyfocus per day, increased by +10% for being filled, and increased by another +10% if it contains a pawn with a relationship to the meditator. It is further increased by being withing 10 tiles of up to 4 graves or sarcophagi (+1% if empty, +2% if full), for a maximum psyfocus of 38%.
Analysis[edit]
There are few mechanical benefits for using a sarcophagus over a grave. Sarcophagi are better as a Morbid meditation focus.
They can also be built on constructed floors and stone floor while graves can't, slightly improving the cleanliness and beauty of a room. Otherwise, a grave fulfils the same purpose but cheaper. Of course, a sacrcophagus can be built for sentimental reasons or to make a favorite colonst's corpse easier to distinguish. Sarcophagi provide no beauty unless made of a material like marble or jade, and even then the pre-quality beauty is equal that of a wall or fence of that material.
If wanting to preserve a colonist's corpse so that it can be revived by resurrector mech serum, place a sacrophagus or grave inside of a freezer. If corpse preservation is critical, the following setup would provide the most safety to a corpse:
- Build a dedicated freezer containing a sacrophagus or grave.
- Have coolers set to as low as possible, well below freezing to keep temperatures low in case of a solar flare.
- Have a double walled room with an airlock of multiple doors, all foribidden. A vac barrier
should be included if possible.

Notes[edit]
Despite the mood bonus for burying a colonist in a sarcophagus being removed, it still exists in the game code. This is unlike other obsolete content which is usually removed. It is currently unclear if it is simply a bug that it doesn't occur, if its lack of removal is an oversight, or if there are simply unknown requirements to trigger it in-game.
