Obsidian (ore) is a rare natural structure that can be mined to obtain obsidian.
Occurrence[edit]
Mineral obsidian veins can only spawn in maps with the obsidian deposits feature, exclusive to the lava field biome. They never occur outside of obsidian deposits. Veins are fairly large, 20 to 40 tiles in size.
Number of veins in map[edit]
The number of veins is a function of the hilliness and the size of the map. Standard size maps have 5 obsidian veins on small hills, 7 on large hills, and 9 on mountainous terrain. Lava field maps cannot have flat terrain.

Summary[edit]
Obsidian tiles have 1,200 health each, making them one of the fastest ores to mine. Each mined block has a base yield of 40 obsidian, however this is modified by factors such as the Difficulty setting and the Mining yield of the pawn.
Analysis[edit]
Mining obsidian ore is the best way to acquire obsidian, a great material for crafting sharp melee weapons like longswords. Veins are large enough to yield the materials for a few longswords. With several veins spawning per map it's feasible to spam craft obsidian weapons to farm high quality weapons.
