Lava field
Barren wastes burned clean by volcanic heat. Periodic lava eruptions can burn people and buildings, but also enrich the soil with mineral deposits.

Lava field is a warm biome in RimWorld added by the Odyssey DLC.
Summary[edit]
Lava fields are the only biome to naturally have mineable obsidian. Lava fields have multiple volcanic events, as described in the Events section.
Do note that the spawn chance of this biome is unusual. The selected tile needs to be a valid placement for either a desert or an arid shrubland and will be evaluated as said biome, and have the correct random number associated. It also can't spawn on flat tiles.
In the lists below the number in brackets represents the relative commonality.

Events[edit]
Lava fields have three unique events:
- Volcanic debris: 8-12 pieces of debris will land on unroofed tiles, damaging them.
- Lava Emergence: The lava will make temporary shallow lava that pawns can walk through. After a few days, the shallow lava turns into removable cooled lava. When the cooled lava is removed using the remove flooring command, the terrain returns to original type. The lava emergence can flow over any pathable terrain and over chunks or items on the ground. The lava cannot flow through walls, doors, fences, barricades, graves, columns and other objects.
- Lava Flow: Lava will emerge from the edge of the map and will flow only over volcanic rock and cooled lava terrain. [Verify] The Lava Flow will create shallow lava that is pathable and leave behind cooled lava terrain after a few days. The lava cannot flow through walls, doors, fences, barricades, graves, columns and other objects. The shallow lava can light adjacent flammable objects on fire.
Summary[edit]
Lava fields are similar to arid shrublands, but uniquely challenging due to the lava and debris.
- Food and Growing: Easy (excluding fires) - Growing seasons are long or year-round, and while some of the map is covered in volcanic rock, rich soil is fairly common.
- Disease: Easy-Moderate - Like arid shrubland, diseases do not happen frequently in lava fields, but wild healroot does not grow naturally. This presents a challenge if there is no pawn with Plants 8.
- Temperature: Moderate - Lava fields range from temperate to warm. Heat waves can present a challenge in the warmer end of lava fields. Also, trees may not be accessible during a lava event unless a heavy bridge or gravship substructure is built to walk over the lava.
- Fires: Very Difficult - Lava causes fires, igniting flammable buildings in its wake. Boomalopes and boomrats both spawn in this biome.
- Unique: Lava emergences and debris can cause base damage. Shallow lava on the map is dangerous for pawns to walk through, and may cause accidents when auto pathing.
