Glowforest

Glowforest

Geysers spew out massive sulfur clouds that cast the region into permanent darkness. Huge fungal colonies bloom in the dark, fed by the nutrients that the geysers bring to the surface. These areas are alluring and dangerous.

Glowforest is a temperate biome in RimWorld added by the Odyssey DLC.

Summary[edit]

Glowforest biomes are permanently covered in smoke, preventing sunlight from reaching at all. This means that a number of fungi can grow freely, and darkness-related preceptsContent added by the Ideology DLC will always be active outdoors.

In the lists below the number in brackets represents the relative commonality.

Flora[edit]

Fauna[edit]

Additionally, these animals can spawn in coastal maps:

If the map is pollutedContent added by the Biotech DLC, then the game may choose to spawn in wild animals from this list instead:

Analysis[edit]

Glowforest is essentially a biome that's permanently night, although the fungal light will allow pawns to move and work at normal pace. Darkness-related ideoligionsContent added by the Ideology DLC will benefit from the glowforest, with combat in darkness being a massive accuracy boost that's always active in a glowforest.

  • Growing and Food: Moderate (IdeologyContent added by the Ideology DLC) or Very Difficult (no Ideology) - It is warm enough for crops to grow for long periods, animals are very frequent, and food can be foraged. However, no sunlight reaches the glowforest, meaning normal crops cannot grow without sun lamps. With Ideology installed, nutrifungusContent added by the Ideology DLC can be grown in the darkness (and is not disrupted by fungal light), meaning food should not be an issue at the cost of the −3 Ate fungus cooked moodlet. Even then, other useful crops like healroot and cotton cannot be grown normally. Without Ideology, food must be foraged or hunted for until sun lamps are available.
  • Temperature: Easy to Moderate - Glowforest tiles are generally temperate or warm, generally not too warm outside of summer days and heat waves.
  • Fires: Difficult - Plants are denser than temperate forest, boomalopes are common animals, and boomshrooms add further explosiveness, so fires are common and difficult to contain.

Overall starting difficulty is difficult, although easier with Ideology as nutrifungusContent added by the Ideology DLC can secure food in the early game. Even with Ideology, the lack of medicine can be dangerous, especially for Tribal starts which won't establish sun lamps for a while.
