Boreal forest is a moderately cold biome in RimWorld.

Summary[edit]

A colder version of the temperate forest, but warmer and significantly more populated than a tundra.

In the lists below the number in brackets represents the relative commonality.

Flora[edit]

Fauna[edit]

Additionally, these animals can spawn in coastal maps:

If the map is pollutedContent added by the Biotech DLC, then the game may choose to spawn in wild animals from this list instead:

Analysis[edit]

Boreal forest is a step up in difficulty from temperate forest, but not much harder overall. The growing season will be shorter, meaning more food will need to be produced and stored in the early game, there are less animals and plants, and winters will be colder, but gameplay is otherwise similar to temperature forest.

  • Growing: Moderate - Growing seasons are shorter, but soil is plentiful and warmer boreal forests can have growing seasons of 30 days.
  • Disease: Easy - Diseases happen less frequently than in warm biomes, and wild healroot grows naturally. Medicine may run dry during the winter if not enough is grown or bought.
  • Temperature: Moderate - The temperature can reach dangerous levels during the winter or cold snaps. Heat waves may occur during warmer tiles in the summer, but are fairly rare.
  • Fires: Easy-Moderate - There are plenty of trees and wild plants around to catch fire, but less than a temperate or tropical biome.
  • Predators: Moderate - Animals in general are less common than in warm biomes, but predators are still common and are more likely to get hungry during the winter.

Overall starting difficulty is moderate, with the main challenge coming from the short growing season, thus forcing early game colonies to prepare food, cloth, and medicine in advance. Once greenhouses are established so that the colony can grow crops year-round, the difficulty is similar to most other biomes, with less disease than warm biomes, but winters forcing colder clothing.
