These mostly-frozen plains bear almost no trees and little vegetation. There are a few small animals interspersed with large herds of migratory grazers and their predators.

Summary[edit]

Animal migrations may occur once or twice per year. Growing periods are generally very short or non-existent.

In the lists below the number in brackets represents the relative commonality.

Flora[edit]

Fauna[edit]

Additionally, these animals can spawn in coastal maps:

If the map is pollutedContent added by the Biotech DLC, then the game may choose to spawn in wild animals from this list instead:

Analysis[edit]

Tundra is the coldest biome that still allows for outdoor crop growth. It is a step harder to start in than the boreal forest, as more crops need to be grown before the long winter starts.

  • Food and Growing: Moderate to Very Difficult - Growing seasons range from 20 days to 0 days long. Forageable plants and animals are less frequent, but are present. There is plenty of regular soil and some rich soil, so greenhouses don't need hydroponics to be established.
  • Disease: Easy - Disease events are uncommon. Healroot still grows naturally during the summer, and healroot plants will survive (but not grow in) the cold.
  • Temperature: Moderate to Very Difficult - Warmer tundra tiles can give you some time to prepare before freezing temperatures kick in, and there are some trees to make campfires in a pinch. In the coldest tundra tiles, outdoor temperatures won't go above freezing. In any case, steam geysers can be enclosed inside your starter base for free heating.
  • Fires: Easy - Low plant life means fires are not difficult to fight.

Overall starting difficulty ranges from moderate to difficult, depending on how long the growing season lasts. Significant preparation needs to be done each summer until greenhouses are established. Once greenhouses are established, the difficulty is similar to most other biomes, with less disease than warm biomes but winters forcing more insulative clothing.
