Heavy bridge

A stronger version of the basic bridge which supports heavy structures on top. You can build a whole colony on water with this.

Heavy bridges are structures that can be built on water or space to allow fast movement and the construction of any building and floor on top of them.

Acquisition[edit]

Heavy bridges can be constructed once the Heavy bridges research project has been completed. Each requires Steel 14 Steel and 2,500 ticks (41.67 secs) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder. They can only be constructed on the following terrain types:

Summary[edit]

Heavy bridges occupy the foundation layer, which is above natural terrain, but below regular floors. Unlike the terrain below them, heavy bridges do not penalize movement speed or cleanliness. Heavy bridges can also support all structures and floors.

Heavy bridges are treated as foundations and not floors, but do count as floored tiles for nobleContent added by the Royalty DLC purposes. Because they occupy the foundation layer, gravship substructure cannot be built on them. A gravshipContent added by the Odyssey DLC can land on a bridge, but will destroy the bridge in the process. However, heavy bridges do count as floored terrain for.

Unlike regular bridges, heavy bridges cannot be destroyed by fire or explosions, effectively making them invincible. They can be removed manually by using the "Remove Foundation" gizmo under Architect/Structures.

Bridges and heavy bridges will contain torrential rain, preventing its tile and tiles beyond it from getting flooded.

Analysis[edit]

Heavy bridges allow colonies to build any structure over water or the void of space, and unlike regular bridges, there is no risk of a heavy bridge getting destroyed. However, they are expensive and worth significant wealth.

To save on resources when building in water, it is possible to use regular bridges to cover most tiles, only building heavy bridges on tiles containing heavy/important buildings, tiles where regular bridges are expected to be destroyed, or as firebreaks to limit the spread of fire. Regular bridges are vulnerable to destruction, but natural fire is unlikely when surrounded by water (assuming a firebreak is installed at the entrance), meaning only raiders are a serious threat to them.

Moisture pumps cover a wide area, so they are more cost-effective than bridges and/or heavy bridges if a large plot of buildable area is needed. However, pumps are slower, and you cannot choose which tiles a pump converts. If you only need a few tiles of coverage per area, e.g., to cover up a swamp base, or a thin area, heavy bridges are more appropriate. Note that moisture pumps cannot convert space tiles.

Gravship substructure can be placed over water, allowing tiles of substructure to serve a similar role to heavy bridges. They can be placed freely by uninstalling and re-installing the grav engine wherever substructure is desired. However, substructure costs gravlite panels, which are of limited supply before fabrication benches are unlocked. In addition, they may cause unintended connection to an actual gravship.
