Food is consumed by humans and animals to sate their hunger. Hunger is tracked by a pawn's food meter, also known as saturation. Lack of food leads to starvation.

Raw food

Raw food is used by colonists to survive, either directly eaten when starving or converted into meals via the nutrient paste dispenser or cook stove.

Raw food is harvested from a variety of plants:

  1. wild plants gives agave bushes and raspberry bushes
  2. hydroponics table rises potatoes, rice and strawberries
  3. growing zone grows haygrass, potatoes, rice, strawberries, and corn

Eating raw food causes the Ate raw food thought with a -7 mood penalty (without berries and corn).

Eating raw food restores 5 saturation.

Twistedmeat c.png

Pieces of twisted muscle and gristle, bloated with tumorous growths. These bizarre shreds of flesh must have come from a horrific creature.

Insect meat c.png

Raw butchered flesh. If necessary, can be cooked into meals, or even eaten raw. Extremely unappetizing.

Hay c.png

Nutrient-rich grasses and shoots, harvested and compacted for storage. Hay is good animal feed, but inedible for humans.

Toxipotatoes.png

Raw toxipotatoes. Once harvested, toxipotatoes are very dietarily similar to potatoes. However, when eaten raw, they have a higher chance of causing food poisoning.

Meat human c.png

Raw butchered flesh. Can be cooked into meals or eaten raw, although most humans dislike the idea.

Corn.png

Raw corn.

Potatoes.png

Raw potatoes.

Rice.png

A low grain plant that thrives in rich soil and yields food fast, but is not nice to eat uncooked.

Agave fruit.png

Raw agave fruit.

Raw fungus.png

Raw fungus obtained by harvesting fungi growing in caves. It cannot be farmed.

Berries.png

Assorted berries. Nice to eat, even when raw.

Milk.png

Milk from an animal.

Meat big c.png

Raw butchered flesh. Can be cooked into meals or eaten raw.

Duck egg (unfert.) b.png

Unfertilized duck egg. It can be eaten raw, but it's much, much better cooked.

Egg small b.png

Fertilized chicken egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a chick. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Duck egg (fert.) b.png

Fertilized duck egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a duckling. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Egg small b.png

Unfertilized chicken egg. It can be eaten raw, but it's much, much better cooked.

Insect jelly c.png

Jelly stored and used as food by oversized insects. It is smooth, rich, and brings joy to those who consume it. Because of its unique biological properties, it can nourish almost any creature and never rots.

Insect jelly is a type of food that periodically appears near insect hives. It fills the recreation meter of colonists by 8% when eaten raw. Note that it is considered raw food, and so has the same 2% food poisoning chance when consumed by humans. It can also be used as a cooking ingredient, substituting meat.

Egg small b.png

Unfertilized goose egg. It can be eaten raw, but it's much, much better cooked.

Egg small b.png

Fertilized goose egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a goose. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Turkey egg (fert.) b.png

Fertilized turkey egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a baby turkey. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Emu egg (fert.) b.png

Fertilized emu egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a baby emu. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Cassowary egg (fert.) b.png

Fertilized cassowary egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a baby cassowary. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Tortoise egg (fert.) b.png

Fertilized tortoise egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a baby tortoise. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Egg small b.png

Fertilized ostrich egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a baby ostrich. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Fertilized iguana egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a baby iguana. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Egg oval b.png

Fertilized cobra egg. If all goes well, it should hatch into a baby cobra. It can be eaten raw, but it's much better cooked.

Meals

Advanced meal types require multiple ingredients but have better psychological and nutritive effects.

BabyFood c.png

A bland vegetarian mash. Babies love it, but children and adults will be upset if they're forced to eat it.

Nutrient paste meal a.png

A synthetic mixture of protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins, amino acids and minerals. Everything the body needs, and absolutely disgusting.

A nutrient paste meal is produced from a nutrient paste dispenser, using raw food ingredients.

Simple meal a.png

A simple meal quickly cooked from a few ingredients.

A simple meal is a meal and the most basic way to prepare raw food for consumption

Fine meal a.png

A complex dish assembled with care from a wide selection of ingredients.

A fine meal is a higher quality meal that requires both meat and vegetables to create.

Vegetarian fine meal a.png

A complex dish assembled with care from vegetarian ingredients.

A vegetarian fine meal is a variant of the fine meal created from vegetarian ingredients.

Packaged survival meal a.png

A high-quality packaged meal, manufactured for use in survival situations. While it never rots, it can still deteriorate if left outside. Great for traveling.

Packaged survival meals, sometimes abbreviated as 'PSM', are a high-tech long-lasting food option. They are the colonists' primary food source at the very start of each game (except for a tribal start). They can also be found in cargo pods or cooked (after research) by colonists with a minimum cooking skill of 8. Packaged survival meals restore 0.9 nutrition and do not spoil, meaning they do not require cold storage. Note that they can still deteriorate. They require 0.3 nutrition of vegetarian and 0.3 nutrition of meat or animal product to produce.

Environment

As of version 0.8.657 (16 December 2014) food will spoil when outdoors. This can cause unhappiness by creating an ugly enviroment and can turn large food stockpiles into rotting messes. Food spoils faster when exposed to various environmental changes in temperature and weather. This can be solved by either settling in a naturally colder place or by creating an freezer room with coolers. In the early game, this can pose a threat for some players, depending on what biome they are in, making a small freezer a pretty high priority for most players.

As of version 0.9.722 (19 February 2015) items not placed under a roof will deteriorate. Freezing or refrigeration alone do not prevent deterioration of food (i.e. a raider dies and drops their fine meal outdoors during freezing weather, that meal will still decay from deterioration). Deterioration can be prevented by ensure items are stored underneath a roof, which may be of constructed, thin rock, or overhead mountain types.

Items in the table below with deterioration rate 0.00/d do not deteriorate.

Food deterioration rates
