Concrete

Concrete

Rough concrete. It is cheap and quick to build, but is also quite ugly.

Concrete is a cheap and fireproof flooring.

Acquisition

Concrete can be constructed once the Stonecutting research project has been completed. Each tile requires Steel 1 Steel and 100 ticks (1.67 secs) of work.

Summary

Concrete has a −1 beauty rating per tile, and cleaning filth on it takes only 80% of the time. It is otherwise unremarkable flooring, being fireproof and not penalizing walk speed.

Analysis

Concrete is cheap, very easy to lay, and quick to clean. Smoothing stone is free, but takes much more work to create. Unlike wood floor, concrete is not flammable. Compared to just keeping a dirt floor, concrete has a cost, but is cleaner by default, which improves medical outcomes and research speed. Note that artificial floors accumulate filth, so an uncleaned floor can ironically end up dirtier than plain dirt.

Despite using steel, a valuable resource, the actual cost is quite low. Compared to higher quality tiles, the beauty penalty can be offset by using sculptures. A normal quality, wood large sculpture can counteract up to 100 tiles of concrete, which is more cost effective than using paved tiles. The better the artist, the more efficient sculptures + concrete becomes, even surpassing carpet.

Outdoors, the beauty penalty is negligable. Concrete can be placed like flagstone to improve walking speed, used as a 2-tile wide fire barrier to protect buildings and crops, or put underneath wind turbines to prevent tree growth.
