Summary by Harakoni

Change implemented.

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

As suggested by FixSomeBugs here, I've edited common.css to widen the infoboxes. This makes it easier to fit long stat names without having to split it over multiple lines, and helps remove a lot of the empty space that was previously on the page. Animal infoboxes in particular significantly shorter and more compact now.

Imo it significantly improves readability, but because it affects the whole wiki I thought I'd get feedback on it.

I've also asked Jimyoda for feedback.

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

The animal infoboxes look alright to me, however for the weapon infoboxes it appears that this change also made weapon thumbnails look bigger than before so now they appear blurred.

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

If you're talking about the change from this size to the big size, then that wasn't this change. That was implemented a while ago to deal with the wildly inconsistent image sizes in the infoboxes, and to prevent the images overflowing the edges of the infoboxes as several were doing before.

If thats not what you're talking about and its further worsened that blurring, I'll have to look into that

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure if the blurring was already there before the size change to the infoboxes, so perhaps you can look into it?

Summary by Harakoni

It was a caching issue and did eventually resolve itself.

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

Hey PigeonGuru, I was trying to add all the Psycast icons to the wiki. To keep them consistently named and help usability, I moved two existing screenshots that shared names with the casts. They're now at FlashstormScreenshot and BerserkScreenshot and seem to be working fine. However the new uploads of the cast icons are acting weird. Showing 64x64 versions of the old screenshots, when I try to revert they show that the new image was used, but then undoing that revert doesn't do anything. I think its a caching issue but purging and the other usual tricks doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Hopefully it IS just a caching or local issue, but if it doesn't resolve by itself in time, (just check the psycast page and see if the icons are right) I'd really appreciate it if you could take a look at some point. Another pair of eyes would be great. Thanks!

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

It should be a caching issue, give it a few hours and it should resolve itself. I've had similar issues when uploading pics in the past.

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

Wait... The creation was a mistake! I'm sorry about the page.

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

Don't you think you have "mistakenly" created too many pages by now? Any more pages made by "mistake" and you'll be blocked.

I'd strongly suggest keeping off the "create page" function for now.

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

By the way, thanks for deleting the duplicate file of MechCluster.jpeg.

Testperson's spam story on the entire wiki

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

Hello PigeonGuru my friend, I was pleased to inform you that Testperson was truly spamming the wiki. He spammed your friend's page (that was Dninemfive) and additionally he got blocked by you. What a rude spammer right? And also Testperson was spamming someone's talk page and you hid the post! The reason for Testperson's block was: Inserting nonsense/gibberish into pages:Spammed a user talk page. That was a mean aggressive spammer who spammed the wiki. Thanks to you blocked Testperson and you can, right? Anyways, Gotta go. Message by Jakek1356 Feel free to reply to this topic on User talk:Harakoni.

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

I get it, no need to spam everyone else's talk pages just to tell them as well.

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

Hello, I was saying that you can change my user group from none to moderator or none to bureaucrat? I hope you can promote me later. Anyways, Good Luck!

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

and also please feel free to reply if i'm promoted, ok?

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

Sorry, I don't have promotion rights. Also we don't promote ppl unless they contribute a lot to the wiki, which all the current moderators have, at least long ago.

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

Ok, that's fine if i don't get promoted.

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

I'll ask Zesty, ok?

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

You can try but I don't think it'll work.

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

Ok, you can try promoting me.

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

As I said I don't have the rights to promote you. You have to ask Zesty in the end, just that I don't think your application will be accepted.

Jakek1356 (talkcontribs)

Ok, I'll ask Zesty to promote me.

None of the body part infoboxes are used properly on their page - they're meant to summarize the item, but the stats and effects aren't in them (or maybe can't be put in them?). Atm pages are just listing the bonuses/effects they provide in the main body, but that defeats the purpose of the infoboxes and theres no standard implementation across all the pages anyway. Additionally, all the new implanted weapons should have the weapon stats in the boxes so users can quickly and easily compare actual weapons to them (and so need damage, cooldown, AP, DPS in the box).

Unfortunately I have no idea how to make the existing template work as is, how to fix it if it can't do what it needs to, nor how to create a working one. For example Power claw has Melee Damage in its info box, but I haven't been able to make that stat appear on any other pages for the other implanted weapons let alone add the other stats that should be in the box.

I was hoping you could either educate me how to make it work (that is; if it does work) or that you could fix it - at the very least the option to have a list in the "Stat Modifiers" so we could have something like:

Stat Modifiers

_______________________

  • Sharp/Blunt/Heat Armor by 35/20/40%
  • Beauty -1
  • Moving-10%

On the armorskin page would make them so much more useful. If you can't help and don't know anyone that could, no worries. Its just annoying with all the new body parts that came in with royalty.

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

Currently I think the body part infoboxes are broken. I'm not entirely sure how to fix them, though I'll give it a shot.

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

As an update, in case it wasn't obvious I'm just moving ahead with taking them all off this template and switching to the standard infobox. Its lets us do things like compare them directly to armor pieces and eventually do the same for weapons. Harakoni (talk) 06:06, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

I already saw that. But we still need to think about how to deal with the part efficiency and such.

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

That can be implemented into the infobox - I couldn't figure out how to do it with the old template, but we can definitely do that with the infobox . The main question is what info do you want to be able to pull from the it and what needs to be displayed. A simple list on the box like

  • Part efficiency to 1.25
  • Movement -0.8

etc is easy but e.g. if you want to see everything that replaces hands, we need a categorization that can uniquely identify that it replaces the hand but also show things like bionic arms that replace the hand the arm etc.

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

I see, though I'm not exactly sure how to implement this.

I'll let you experiment on infobox main or a new infobox template if you wish, just don't break anything too badly.

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

Haha I'll try not to. I've made some necessary edits to the infobox template in the past (though tbh it needs also some TLC at some point - its a hodgepodge atm). If you do think of any specific ideas on searchable/sortable parameters that would be useful let me know. Some method of easily determining what is incompatible with what is the only one I can think of besides the already-implemented armor and weapon comparions.

Jimyoda (talkcontribs)

This is something I should be able to do. I previously dug into the workings of those infoboxes. What I found was that the base stats section filters to show properties that end with 'base' (e.g. Market Value Base) while the stat modifiers section filters to show properties that end with 'factor' or 'offset' (e.g. Mood Offset). If a given page's infobox is using the Define template, then you can only declare stats listed there. If it doesn't have the stat you need, then add it, or ask me to add it.
Beauty -1 is clearly an offset, but for the armor and the moving, it's not clear to me if those are factors or offsets.

These are some of the stats/properties that are already in the Define template (minus the template formatting).

  • Armor - Blunt Base =armor - blunt base
  • Armor - Blunt Factor =armor - blunt factor
  • Armor - Blunt Offset =armor - blunt offset
  • Beauty Offset =beauty offset
  • Moving Factor =moving factor
  • Moving Offset =moving offset
Harakoni (talkcontribs)

Jimyoda, the problem with the define template is that there's a lot of overlap between the different "classes" of item. Wood for example is a material and a weapon, venom talon a body part and weapon, armorskin gland a body part and armor, beer a meal, a drug and a weapon, grenadier armor armor and a weapon, etc. By the time we add everything to every define template, it seems like you might as well use the general version.

Hello admin or moderator! I wanted to thank you for keeping this wiki alive and well!

While I'm a new person when it comes to editing this wiki, I thought that for more real time talk and chatter when it comes to the wiki itself might be extremely beneficial for everyone. So in that case I have created the Rimworld Wiki Discord Server. Over the next week or so, I will be adding custom bots, commands, and functionality in this server to make our job as contributors easier and more efficient. (Link for the Discord Server is on the main page, the community portal, and my profile page as well)

As soon as you come into the server, please DM me or tag me in general chat so I can add your appropriate Role as an Admin or Moderator.

Just to make sure that all the Admins/Moderators get this message (and I really hate to do this) I'm going to copy and paste this message on all the staff's talk pages. Again, sorry for copy and pasting but I want to make sure that you all get a notification ping on the wiki.

Keep doing all the good work! You guys are awesome! Let's keep updating and pushing hard to get this wiki up to date!

Thanks, DJRedNight#3428

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

Got your message- I've been keeping watch on the wiki constantly even though I currently don't make many edits myself.

I would like to create an page, or an article somewhere to list the pack animals in game, along with a comparison table of how much they can carry with additional info of their general melee DPS/Health/Food Consumption to try to give folks an idea of what they might want to have in a caravan, Am I free to create a new page? And if not, Should I put it in animals ?

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

Just FYI theres a similar table at List of animals that already has most of that info on it, adding carry weight to it would be good.

Zflocco (talkcontribs)

Right, I could just slap it in there for carryweight, but as my aforementioned idea of health as well as sometimes having a animal that could take a bullet or two more might be preferential

Harakoni (talkcontribs)

You could add health or anything else you need as well? Just need to edit Template:Animals/Row. If you're concerned about space, there are ways to streamline the rest of the table as well, such as "Trainability" replacing "Obedience Release Rescue Haul"

Zflocco (talkcontribs)

It's more of, How to really display the 'health' I was thinking the body's health value, or a rough "Average" across most of the main parts. E.G. Just because a thrumbo's torso has 520 health, doesn't mean it can't die in less if something like the neck (390) gets shot.

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

A pack animals page may be useful, I suggest you go ahead and make it. Though be careful not to put too much redundant information.

Zflocco (talkcontribs)

I've gone and made the page, Should there be a "Pack Animal" Category as well?

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

Yes, that can be useful.

Thank you for moving some of my edits to the Colony Building guide. I was planning to edit that article as well.

I'm aware that some of my additions to the midgame guide were already out of scope, but I did not want to start editing a second article in parallel.

If you keep moving things, please be aware that there might be more, but I will help with this in the future.

The lines between what goes into a "mid-game" guide and not are somewhat blurry. What is "mid-game", anyway?

PigeonGuru (talkcontribs)

I'd say midgame is after you have settled down, become fully self-sufficient, and built basic facilities. The objective now would be to expand your base, complete research and upgrade your equipment as opposed to being focused on survival.

Siggboy (talkcontribs)

Yes, I know, it's what I wrote into the introduction myself :). My question was more rhetorical than not, because the term is so blurry and not even a meta-game related word.

What's "mid game" on an icesheet, for example? When you have your first paste dispenser? Hydroponics room?

It is very easy to become self-sufficient with basic facilities in a strict sense of the word. However, in many people's minds that would still be very "early game". So it's definitely not the definition of the term.

I don't mind using the term for a guide, because it's intuitive to most people what it means. All I'm saying is that it does not make much sense to draw boundary lines around the word and apply it pedantically.

The changes you've made were good though, I will put more thought into it and reorganize things further. Thanks for the help!

Pangaea (talkcontribs)

If I may be a little pedantic :P : Think it might be better to drop intermediate and advanced, and lowercase the titles (like in the heading of this topic), so it's easier to link to them in-text in other articles without it looking weird with uppercase words. I'm not sure why German-type grammar enters the English usage so much.

On the first point, we don't have an advanced midgame guide or an intermediate (or basic) endgame guide, so it seems like butter on bacon, if that term translates well. As you say above, there isn't a clear dividing line between them, but given the sheer size of them I do think it makes sense so separate some of the overall content.

Personally I would prefer a good bit of this to go into separate articles on all these various features or things, but I kinda ran out of steam earlier on trying to implement some pretty big changes, when the extensions and underlying wiki technology kept throwing bugs and not acting like it was supposed to. That way we could have genuine guide content in the guides, and explanations of features etc in individual articles.

Thank you for the wonderful contributions Siggboy -- it's great to see lots of activity in here again :)

Siggboy (talkcontribs)

Yes, I agree on all points. More stuff needs to be extracted into separate articles. In fact, I've just done that by -- very pedantically -- editing /wiki/Comfort (so I won't have to write a short novel about that stat in the guide section).

There are many other areas where the wiki is a little, um, undermaintained at the moment. But I get the point of "running out of steam", it is very work intensive.

With regards to German-type grammar: as a German myself I can assure you it is not easy for us Germans to keep Germanisms out of our English, because the two languages are at the same time quite similar, and then not at all. If there's German-type grammar, it was probably written by a German... please forgive us (for this, and also for those Wars, LUL :).

Siggboy (talkcontribs)

Now here are the types of "guides" that make sense in my opinion:

  • Quickstart, Getting Started, Beginner's Guide, WTF Is Going On Guide -- something along those lines. It should explain why you need certain mods to make the game suck a lot less (it's true), and help get a complete newb up to speed with the basics. Guides like this exist for Dwarf Fortress.
  • Intermediate guide for somewhat experienced players. Should be interesting for folks like me, who have maybe launched a space ship on Phoebe/Medium, but mostly messed around and not watched any experienced players (on Twitch or Youtube)
  • Advanced tips and tricks section, like how to survive Naked/Merciless/Icesheet with killboxes and shenanigans.

The division into early, mid- and late-game doesn't really make that much sense. Of course there could be an article talking about the reactor powering event, or mid-game caravaning, but just covering "the mid-game" or "the end-game" is a little arbitrary, and most players will probably not know what to expect from such a guide. It is too abstract.

The rule for a good guide title (and scope) should be this: Most players should know, just by looking at the title, and maybe reading the first paragraph, if the guide is useful for them or not.

Pangaea (talkcontribs)

Oh, sorry, I didn't know you were German :) I merely meant the surprisingly common practice currently of uppercasing substantives to give them more importance. It looks a bit strange (imo), and I see it many places, not just on this wiki. It was a tangent, so sorry about that. Practically, however, it makes it easier to use links in articles if the page is titled with lowercase letters instead of Crashed Ship Part or whatever it may be (I've not checked that page, it's just an example).

I agree with what you write about the guides. I actually meant it the other way (skipping intermediate and advanced), but you make a better case. The separation between mid-game and end-game is abstract or not clear, so it's probably better to use intermediate and advanced instead. Kinda the same issue there with not-clear-dividing-lines, but still better than mid-game and such. What really is mid-game anyway? It will be different for all players, and whether they want to launch the ship, or just set up a basic base and then go again.

There was so much I wanted to do when I started out here, including a total redesign of the look and frontpage, but the work was too much, I got frustrated with all the issues, and then ran out of steam and sort of gave up. Maybe I'll try again later, but right now I'm enjoying playing the game instead :D

Siggboy (talkcontribs)

I don't know when I will run out of steam, but there must be some low hanging fruits here, that would immediately greatly improve the wiki.

A better front page is not a lot of work, it just needs some coordination between the key people involved in the effort.

My experience was that I could not find a lot of things by going through the front page, making it less than useful. In many cases it's just easier to use Google anyway. The front page must be very compact and to the point, and guide new people to the few most important locations.

I think the most common way that people use the wiki is to look up hard facts about thing X -- for example: How does beauty work? What does the empty "Ship" menu do? How long does plant Y need to grow?

That is the stuff that needs to be accessible, complete and correct in the wiki. The guides are important too, but guide information is usually found by simply Googling, and then going through Reddit/Twitch/Youtube/Wiki depending on what turns up.

I, for a fact, have not discovered information because the front page was so useful in guiding me there. I usually type a word into the search box, and hope that there is a page for it. For example, when I type "Beauty", I want to end up at the page that gives me all the relevant facts.

By the way, there is no need to apologize. I agree that capitalizing too many words is very bad style in English. Germans know that, however, I don't think capitalization happens because Germans are used to it. When we use WhatsApp or online chat we usually type in all lowercase anyway. It's just easier.
