Steel is the primary resource for mid- to late-game construction, and is therefore vital. Without steel, you cannot build new power generators, conduits, batteries, temperature regulators like coolers and heaters, or turrets and sandbags, so ensure that you have a steady supply. Steel appears at your crash site when a new game is started. After this steel is exhausted, it can be obtained through random drops, trading, mining, disassembling mechanoids, or smelting steel slag chunks into usable steel at an Electric Smelter.

The Potato Plant is ideal for growing in soil with poor fertility as a substitute to the rice plant. It is quick to grow and produces a large amount of food. It can be planted in the growing area or hydroponics basin. Yields 4 food at 100% growth. Requires 3.15 days with full light in optimal temperature range to reach maturity.
