Toxipotato plant

Toxipotato plant

A genetically-engineered variant of potato adapted for growing in polluted areas. Compared to regular potatoes, toxipotatoes take less time to grow but yield a meager harvest of food. When eaten raw, they have a high chance of causing food poisoning. In spite of this, they have saved many settlers from starvation after toxic events.

The toxipotato plant is a domesticated plant added by the Biotech DLC. It notably must be planted on polluted terrain; Toxipotatoes cannot be grown on unpolluted terrain and will rapidly die if planted on a tile that is subsequently cleaned of pollution.

It is worth noting that toxipotato plants still die to toxic fallout.

Growing[edit]

  • Ground Type Gravel Soil Rich Soil Hydroponics
    Fertility (%) 70 100 140 280
    Real Grow Time (days)[1] 9.05 9.05 9.05 9.05
    Base Yield/day[2] 0.77 0.77 0.77 0.77
    1. Actual days to grow, taking into account rest time.
    2. Per plant, assuming Crop Yield Multiplier of 1.0.
Note that Difficulty settings change the Crop Yield Multiplier.
  • Analysis[edit]

Toxipotato plants (0.77 base yield/day) are strictly inferior in yield to both potato plants (1.03 yield/day) and rice plants (1.08 yield/day) in regular soil. While +16.67% better in yield/work than rice, toxipotatoes take ×163.4% the time per plant to grow, so are a less reliable crop. If work is a concern, then regular potatoes (+57.14%) or corn (+214.81%) are much better options for yield.

Toxipotatoes can be grown on polluted soil, but their abysmal yield in all aspects means that it would take a heavily polluted map, where little clean soil is nearby, to make it feasible. Even then, you could clear out a field to grow more traditional plants in. Cleaning can take a while, so toxipotatoes can be used in the earlier stages of an extremely polluted colony.

The extra food poisoning chance is negligible, as raw food should always be cooked anyways.
