Penoxycyline

Penoxycyline

A drug for preventing diseases from starting. Blocks malaria, sleeping sickness, (and) plague. Take every five days to remain effective.

This drug only prevents new infections. It does not cure existing infections - even those that are not yet discovered.

Penoxycyline prevents three infectious and potentially quite deadly diseases:

It prevents only cases which would be acquired while it is active. It does nothing to cure pre-existing diseases, including diseases which have been acquired but which have not yet presented symptoms (i.e. have not yet been "discovered").

It does nothing to prevent or cure infection from wounds or operations.

It is recommended to be taken every 5 days (but see Usage, below).

  • Penoxycyline does nothing to prevent these ailments:
flu, blood rot, scaria*, gut worms, muscle parasites, fibrous mechanites, sensory mechanites, or paralytic abasia
(* found in animals only)

Acquisition

Penoxycyline can either be crafted at a drug lab or purchased from traders. Its synthesis speed is dependent on the Intellectual skill, and skill points progress is attributed to Intellectual.

Usage

Administering Penoxycyline provides true immunity against diseases over its ~5.556 day duration, preventing the protected pawn from catching the protected diseases. It does nothing to stop a disease that has started and is already in progress. Since diseases have a hidden latent stage, taking penoxycyline during this stage still results in a full-blown infection.

While the in-game description says to "Take every five days", the effect actually lasts just more than a half-day longer, giving colonists some time to take the pills without receiving an illness during the downtime of the effect (if the duration were in fact 5.000 days and the colonist could not consume it promptly). Set a drug policy* to tell the pawns to take one every 5 days and keep one in the inventory to take as soon as possible, or be cheap, set it to "6 days" and live dangerously.

(* This schedule can be automated via the [Assign] tab at the bottom of the screen, then using the [Manage drug policies]] UI.)

Penoxycyline is not addictive and proper usage does not result in other consequences (however, read next).

  • Penoxycyline can contribute to overdose, though at ~.4 the severity of "hard drugs", increasing severity by 0.08-0.14. Overdose due to this is uncommon, however, and a pawn would either have to take a few other drugs in combination with penoxycyline, or binge on penoxycyline.

Version history

  • 0.15.1279 - Added as Malari-block, and only prevents Malaria
  • 0.16.1393 - Reworked. Renamed from Malari-block to Penoxycyline and now prevents a wide variety of infections. Cost decreased from 5 neutroamine to 3.
  • In Alpha 17 its cost is further reduced from 3 to 2 neutroamine. It also received an overhaul, such that instead of instantly boosting disease immunity to 61%, it now provides true immunity and cannot reactively increase immunity against a disease that is already in progress.
