Large thruster

Large thruster
An advanced chemfuel thruster with a heat-resistant vacstone liner. It greatly increases the range of a gravship. Thrusters require an unobstructed area free of large buildings and gravship substructure.
Requires vacstone blocks, which can be obtained from orbital asteroids.
A gravship can support up to six large thrusters.

A large thruster is a building added by the Odyssey DLC that increases a gravship’s world-map range and improves launch ritual quality.
Acquisition[edit]
Large thrusters can be constructed once the Standard gravtech research project has been completed. Each requires 220 Steel,
50 Vacstone blocks,
6 Components, 13,200 ticks (3.67 mins) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder, and a construction skill of 5.
Summary[edit]

A gravship can mount up to six large thrusters. They must sit on connected gravship substructure within the build radius of a working grav engine or grav field extender to function.
Each large thruster allows a gravship to travel an additional +16 tiles on the world map, up to a maximum of +96 tiles will all six. Range stacks additively with small thrusters, which provide +10 tiles each up to a maximum of four small thrusters, for a theoretical maximum of 136 tiles with all 10 thrusters. Every tile traveled consumes 10 chemfuel, so a max-range jump with six large and four small thrusters burns 1360 chemfuel — almost two full large chemfuel tanks. Note that cost can be reduced with fuel optimizers.
Launch ritual quality[edit]
During the launch ritual each large thruster contributes +3% quality, up to a maximum of +18% with six large thrusters. These bonuses stack additively with other quality bonuses, including those from small thrusters. Higher ritual quality shortens the relaunch cooldown and lowers the mishap chance on landing. See the Gravship page for full details.
Exclusion zone[edit]
This section is a stub. You can help RimWorld Wiki by expanding it. Reason: What blocks the thruster is currently unclear - substructure and coolers and walls do, some other buildings and trees don't. May be impassible buildings and substructure?. |
The large thruster's exclusion zone (2ˣ7 white rectangle) is visible when the thruster is selected, or when placing the thruster blueprint. Any gravship substructure and impassible buildings[Verify] will block the engine and prevent its bonuses from applying to the gravship. The exclusion zones of several thrusters may overlap, so long as the thruster buildings themselves aren't in any of the zones. So long as the exclusion zone is clear, they will function, even if they enclosed by walls or pointing in opposite directions.
Analysis[edit]
Compared with a small thruster, a large thruster gives more distance and quality per component spent and quality per tile, but less distance per tile. Whenever vacstone and enough substructure is available, large thruster should be prioritized over small thrusters, but basically every gravship will eventually want a full complement of both.
It is to be noted that being farther from your launch spot does not increase the timer on mechanoid raid parties for The Gravship starting scenario and each tile traveled equates to 10 consumed chemfuel. Combining 6 large and 4 small thrusters allows for a maximum range of 136, meaning a maximum chemfuel usage of 1360 chemfuel, or nearly 2 full large chemfuel tanks. This is not typically not recommended for one to do so if other suitable landing spots are available.
When it comes to construction, vacstone is the real gatekeeper. Asteroid mining trips are dangerous: pawns need oxygen, heat and ideally vacsuits. A common tactic is to land at the asteroid rim, excavate an airtight tunnel, and haul chunks back inside the ship for cutting. For those using a shuttle or transport pod, then the raw chunks can be sent home instead - the cut blocks and the chunk have the same weight. Biotech DLC players can automate the job with tunneler and lifter mechs.
