Orbital scanner
A sensor unit that passively scans for irregular objects orbiting the planet. It will periodically detect locations in orbit that can be visited with transport pods, shuttles, or gravships.
The scanner won't function under a roof. Building multiple orbital scanners does not increase the chance to find new locations.

Orbital scanners are buildings added by the Odyssey DLC that automatically detect sites in orbit for mining, looting, and other uses.
Acquisition[edit]
Orbital scanners can be constructed once the Orbital tech research project has been completed. Each requires
180 Steel,
6 Components,
2 Advanced components, 10,000 ticks (2.78 mins) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder, and a construction skill of 8.
Summary[edit]
The scanner will have three main phases:
- Scanning: While powered, the scanner will passively look for orbital objects. This process has an MTB of 60000 ticks (1 day).
- Locating: When an object has been found, the scanner will begin locating its location. This process will take between 8 to 10 days, during which the scanner must be powered. The countdown will pause should the scanner loses power during this period. Once completed, a quest will be given to the player, and the scanner goes to the Cooldown phase.
- Cooldown: After the Scanning phase is completed, an 18 days cooldown is applied before new objects can be scanned. This cooldown goes down concurrently with the 8-10 days wait time of the Locating phase. If a scanner completed locating an object, then this cooldown must be finished before it returns to the Scanning phase again. During this period, the scanner can be turned off to save on power until the cooldown is completed. Do note that this phase is not mentioned or visible in-game - the scanner will still say that it is passively scanning for objects, similar to the Scanning phase.
Only one scanner is required to be built - multiple scanners on the same map will not increase the chance of finding new destinations. If you have multiple scanners on the same map, the game will randomly select one powered scanner to be the one to have found the object during the Scanning phase - only that scanner must then be powered for the rest of the Locating phase. Other than that, there are no differences between having one or multiple scanners - only one object will be detected during the Scanning phase, and other scanners will not detect new objects during the Locating or Cooldown phase. As such, you should only build one scanner to save on both resources as well as power.
The scanner can be built on the ground or a gravship, and will function both while planetside and in orbit. If the scanner is built on a gravship, the scanner does not need to remain on the same map that the object was first detected in order for the scan to complete.
Quests[edit]
When a scan is complete, the game will randomly select a random quests among these:
- Resource Asteroid: An asteroid containing mineable resources.
- This quest has a weight of 1.5 (compared to the weight of 1 for most of the other quests), making it more likely to be chosen than other quests.
- The random resource can be gold, uranium or plasteel, with each of them having an equal likelihood of being chosen.
- The location is similar to asteroids generated on world creation, with some minor differences. Its icon on the world map contain color veins - based on which resources the asteroid has. Additionally, asteroids found by this method will contains more of such resources compared to pre-generated ones[Verify] .
- The asteroid has a chance to spawn with an archean tree as well as a crate with one or more archean seeds and/or[Confirmation needed] an in stone enclosed chamber with cryptosleep caskets[Variant? Occupants?] in it.
- Orbital Item Stash: An asteroid with a hollow core containing structures with loots.
- The location is similar to the previous one, but without any mineable resources other than vacstone.
- Abandoned Platform: An ancient orbital platform with no signs of life.
- Orbital Wreck: Wreckage of abandoned platform with hostile scavengers.
- Mechanoid Platform: An orbital platform with high mechanoid activity.
- This quest has a weight of 0.5 (compared to the weight of 1 for most of the other quests), making it less likely to be chosen than other quests.
- Satellite: An abandoned platform, usually protected by outside Uranium Slug Turrets
Outside of the orbital scanner, these quests cannot be randomly given by any other means.
Analysis[edit]
The Orbital scanner is the primary means of finding locations in orbit around the planet.

Version history[edit]
- Odyssey DLC Release - Added
- 1.6.4535 - Clarified the orbital scanner description. The only change is adding "Building multiple orbital scanners does not increase the chance to find new locations." to the end of the description. Fix: Orbital scanner north and south sprites swapped.
