This caste generates Berries berries every two days. This is enough for 2 simple meals per day, or 8 simple meals per 4 dryads. One tree of dryads can thus feed 4.5 people consistently. Eating the raw berries is enough to feed 2.5 people consistently. Tree pruning takes between 8.2 and 3.6 hours per day, depending on Plants skill and tree connection.
A single tree can produce enough food for 8 simple meals per day, which is enough to feed 4.5 people consistently (4 in practicality). Eating the raw berries is enough to feed 2.5 people consistently. This takes between 8.2 and 3.6 hours per day, depending on plants skill and tree connection.

Comparison to grow zones
+
Analysis
* Does not require any temperature, light level, etc.
+
Berrymakers are incredibly resilient. They do not require light, soil, are immune to blight, and are much more resistant to temperature. This makes them useful in biomes where winters are harsh, or there isn't much growing space. However, gauranlen trees are extremely work-intensive to prune.

* Works year-round and at a constant rate
+
A single pawn can maintain about 2 trees with plants 10+, meaning each pawn can support itself and seven others, year-round.

* Requires more work per tile (about .58 hrs work per day per tile, assuming the tree takes 9 tiles and the rest are used for grow zones, and the pawn is level 10 plants or more)
+
Comparison to rice in soil
 +
In terms of work, rice plants are virtually always better than berrymakers.
 +
* Without the Tree Connection meme, rice gives more Food / Work for any amount of Plants skill past 1.
 +
* With the Tree Connection meme, rice gives more Food / Work at any reasonably competent planter (Plants 8+ or so).
 +
* The better the Plants skill, the worse gauranlen trees get. This is because Pruning Speed only increases by +1% / level, while Plant Work Speed increases by +11.5% / level.
 +
Keep in mind that rice is the least efficient crop for work. Potatoes and corn are even more efficient.

* Work speed is not affected by pawn stack factors, only plants skill
+
Other than their hardiness, dryads are more efficient for space. Assuming gauranlen trees take up only 9 tiles of space, 4 dryads have a 0.444 nutrition/day/tile. Rice has .054 nutrition/day/tile, and other crops are slightly worse.

* max 3.2 nutrition per day (64 berries/day w/ 4 dryads). 0.356 nutrition/day/tile
+
Pruning dryad trees only cares about Plants skill and Global Work Speed, so disabled pawns may prune better than they sow.

* Rice has .054 nutition/day/tile
+
Comparison to hydroponics
 +
Hydroponics basins do not impact Food / Work. They only impact grow time and space efficiency. Dryads are still more space efficient. Hydropoinics has a max 0.136 nutrition/day /tile. Hydroponics requires major resource investment, consuming power and taking steel and components. It also requires Electricity researched.

* 1 Pawn can maintain at most 2 trees with plants 10+, meaning each pawn can support itself and seven other pawns, year-round.
+
Hydroponics are generally grown indoors with sun lamps. Sun lamp set ups are reasonably stable against temperature. Hydroponics are still prone to blight, power outages, solar flares, but hydroponics are stable enough to obsolete berrymakers.

Comparison to hydroponics
+
Conclusion
* Does not require power/major resource investment (at max efficiency, 1 tile of hydroponics requires 18 steel, .25 components, and 47.7 watts)
+
Gauranlen trees are incredibly work-intensive, but are prone to much fewer issues that would impede crops. Their one weakness is toxic fallout, where hydroponics or a large storage is required to avoid build up. Berrymakers may be good in tribal scenarios, where you do not have access to hydroponics, in situations where growing space is limited.

* Not prone to power outages, solar flares, etc. Additionally resistant to fire (dryads put fire out)
+
Pruning is not directly affected by plant work speed, so a lazy or joywire-induced pawn can work through a tree faster. However, virtually any means of increasing plant work speed makes any crop a less work-intensive alternative.

* Max .136 nutrition/day /tile growing rice
+
Space calculations assume that gauranlen trees only take 9 tiles. Gauranlen trees cannot be placed in a 4-tile radius from each other. However, you can place regular growing zones within the 2-4 tile radius from a tree. In a desert, these trees can be placed on sand, which cannot grow regular crops anyway.

* Assuming you are growing potatoes in hydroponics (highest work/nutrition), you get 7 nutrition max/day for 3hrs of work
+
Version history
* Assuming you are growing rice in hydroponics (highest nutrition/day), you get 13.1 nutrition a day for 8.6 hrs of work

* Assuming you are maintaining 2 trees at 100% connection, you get 6.4 nutrition a day for 10.4 hours of work

Conclusion
Gauranlen trees are incredibly work-intensive but are prone to much fewer issues that would normally impede crop growth. They are more efficient per tile than any other method but require much more space by themselves, these calculations were done assuming grow zones are made between trees, meaning the trees only take 9 tiles. If it is just trees, each takes 25 tiles of space, plus excess for each edge tree. Pruning is not affected by plant work speed, which can be increased in several ways: the new plants specialist role (+70% plant work speed, +30% harvest quantity, activated ability +40% plant work speed to other nearby pawns for a day, every couple of days), field hand (+140% plant work speed), and plants skill. If you have a significant amount of these bonuses on a plants pawn, the time they take to make food is drastically cut, and a single pawn with enough of these bonuses can exceed 300% work speed. Meanwhile trees are hard stuck at minimum time to maintain of 5 hours a day.

I recommend having at most 1 Garanlen Connection per plants pawn and putting the trees in fields. The excess space can be used to grow other crops by the same pawn. If you are in a particularly rough environment (low grow periods/little available land) the hardiness of gauranlen trees allows them to survive, although your pawns may not, so make sure to dress them appropriately. The one weakness is toxic fallout since your pawns will have to be outside to prune, in this situation, give up on the tree and simply have the pawn do other things until the fallout passes. Berry makers may also be good in tribal situations where you do not have access to hydroponics or other means of increasing plant production.

A Gauranlen tree supporting 4 berrymaker dryads can make enough berries for 6.4 simple meals, 4.27 fine meals, or 1.28 lavish meals (note that for the fine and lavish meals multiple food inputs are required, thus you cannot make fine meals only out of berries). The simple meals are enough to feed 4.5 people, which is fairly good for how little space the tree takes. Because it's resistant to many normal crops, I would consider it on par with growing on fertile soil. Also, you can choose where to put it for more efficient hauling.

Berrymaker

Berrymaker

A dryad caste specialized in food production. Together with its Gauranlen tree, this dryad can generate nourishing berries on an ongoing basis. However, it is slow and ineffective at work or combat.
In general, dryads are mammal-like creatures that have a symbiotic relationship with the Gauranlen tree. They reproduce together with their tree, which contains a hidden dryad queen. Dryads can morph into various specialized castes.

AnimalDryad

Berrymaker are a caste of Dryads, a type of animal added by the Ideology DLC, that produces berries.

Summary[edit]

All dryads, including the berrymaker, are produced by a gauranlen tree. They have no need to eat, are immune to disease events, and have 100% Toxic Resistance, rendering them immune to Toxic fallout and Toxic buildup. Dryads cannot die from blood loss, so in practice will survive virtually any damage that doesn't immediately kill them. Dryads can retreat to a healing pod in order to regenerate wounds; this takes 3 days and heals all permanent injuries and bad conditions.

This caste generates Berries 40 berries every two days.

Analysis[edit]

Berrymakers are incredibly resilient. They do not require light, soil, are immune to blight, and are much more resistant to temperature. This makes them useful in biomes where winters are harsh, or there isn't much growing space. However, gauranlen trees are extremely work-intensive to prune.

A single pawn can maintain about 2 trees with plants 10+, meaning each pawn can support itself and seven others, year-round.

Comparison to rice in soil[edit]

In terms of work, rice plants are virtually always better than berrymakers.

 • Without the Tree Connection meme, rice gives more Food / Work for any amount of Plants skill past 1.
 • With the Tree Connection meme, rice gives more Food / Work at any reasonably competent planter (Plants 8+ or so).
 • The better the Plants skill, the worse gauranlen trees get. This is because Pruning Speed only increases by +1% / level, while Plant Work Speed increases by +11.5% / level.

Keep in mind that rice is the least efficient crop for work. Potatoes and corn are even more efficient.

Other than their hardiness, dryads are more efficient for space. Assuming gauranlen trees take up only 9 tiles of space, 4 dryads have a 0.444 nutrition/day/tile. Rice has .054 nutrition/day/tile, and other crops are slightly worse.

Pruning dryad trees only cares about Plants skill and Global Work Speed, so disabled pawns may prune better than they sow.

Comparison to hydroponics[edit]

Hydroponics basins do not impact Food / Work. They only impact grow time and space efficiency. Dryads are still more space efficient. Hydropoinics has a max 0.136 nutrition/day /tile. Hydroponics requires major resource investment, consuming power and taking steel and components. It also requires Electricity researched.

Hydroponics are generally grown indoors with sun lamps. Sun lamp set ups are reasonably stable against temperature. Hydroponics are still prone to blight, power outages, solar flares, but hydroponics are stable enough to obsolete berrymakers.

Conclusion[edit]

Gauranlen trees are incredibly work-intensive, but are prone to much fewer issues that would impede crops. Their one weakness is toxic fallout, where hydroponics or a large storage is required to avoid build up. Berrymakers may be good in tribal scenarios, where you do not have access to hydroponics, in situations where growing space is limited.

Pruning is not directly affected by plant work speed, so a lazy or joywire-induced pawn can work through a tree faster. However, virtually any means of increasing plant work speed makes any crop a less work-intensive alternative.
