Chinchillas are small rodents with very soft and valuable fur. If slain, they can be butchered for chinchilla meat and chinchilla fur.
Taming
Chinchillas can be tamed from a tropical rainforest or tropical swamp and farmed for their valuable, insulating, and beautiful furs. Items built or crafted with chinchilla fur will be more beautiful than normal. Armchairs and drapes made out of chinchilla furs can be used to decorate a room. Chinchilla fur provides excellent protection against the cold.
Analysis
When slaughtered, a chinchilla yields 18 meat and 8 fur as a baby; 28 meat and 15 fur as a juvenile; or 49 meat and 21 fur as an adult.
An adult female chinchilla consumes 0.2 nutrition per day. If her offspring are slaughtered immediately, a female chinchilla produces 0.28 nutrition of meat per day, and 2.47 fur per day giving a nutrition efficiency of 1.391, and 12.365 leather per nutrition. If the offspring are allowed to grow to adulthood before they are slaughtered, they will consume an additional 0.49 nutrition per day, but will instead yield 0.48 more nutrition per day and 4.02 more fur per day as they are slaughtered, resulting in a nutrition efficiency of 1.1, and 9.431 leather per nutrition. When considering a population of equal numbers of male and female chinchillas, these numbers fall to 0.696 nutrition efficiency and 6.183 leather per nutrition for baby slaughter, and 0.853 nutrition efficiency and 7.308 leather per nutrition for adult slaughter.
Interestingly, the choice of whether to slaughter chinchillas as babies or adults varies as the proportion of females to males changes, with adult slaughter becoming more optimal as the proportion of males increases. This can be thought of as being due to the nutrition consumption of the males overpowering the benefit of not having to feed the offspring. Baby slaughter becomes preferable as the ratio of females:males rises above 2.4:1 for meat optimisation, or 2:1 for leather optimisation.
Unlike guinea pigs, chinchillas are blocked by fences and so do not require taming upkeep.
Manhunter event
By far, hands down the cutest manhunter event. Would make for an amazing story to tell your friends if your pawns get torn apart from a pack of cute chinchillas.
