Royal Beds are highly resource-intensive to build, but they really liven up the beauty in a room, and also provide a slight bonus to the rate at which colonists recover during sleep, as well as lots of comfort for a good mood boost. So, it is generally wise to upgrade to them as time and resources permit.
Despite its name, it is part of the base game and not the Royalty DLC. It is however required for some content in that DLC, inclding keeping Nobles happy.
