Stool
A simple platform on which to sit. Not very comfortable, but much better than nothing. Can be used at tables, work stations, and elsewhere.

A stool is a type of furniture which your colonists can sit on. Stools can be placed at tables to allow your colonists to eat there; in front of televisions to let them watch; or in front of production benches to provide comfort as they work, improving their mood and allowing them to work longer before needing a break.
Acquisition
It is constructed with 25 Stuff (Metallic/Woody/Stony, 250 for SMVs) in 450 ticks (7.5 secs).
Summary
Comfort
Comfort is a measure of how high a pawn can refill their comfort meter while using the piece of furniture. A pawn sitting in a chair with a higher comfort value can achieve a higher level. It does not affect the rate at which comfort increases only the maximum level. Comfort levels over 100% have no additional effect. Comfort varies by quality but not material. Stools of the same quality level will all have the same quality, regardless of what they're constructed from.
Analysis
Stools are the worst possible seating, with less comfort than dining chairs and armchairs. They require no research or Construction skill to make, and take the least time and resources to make. They can also be made from stone, as well as wood or metals. They are the first available seating for a New Tribe, can be used as cheap furniture for prison cells, and can see use in wood-poor environment.
Seating of any kind is required to eat at a table or play at a poker table. The comfort is otherwise very low, even before considering the alternatives. A pawn resting in a normal bed with any end table and dresser will get to 85% comfort in 1.4 hours of rest, and takes over 18 hours before getting −3 Uncomfortable. Any stool below Excellent quality will never provide enough comfort for any Comfortable moodlet. While pawns could get uncomfortable during extended drafting situations, assigning pawns to "nap" in the middle of the day prevents being uncomfortable at all.
So, outside of New Tribes - which don't immediately have access to beds, end tables / dressers, and dining chairs - placing stools for comfort is rarely beneficial. Unless you're stuck in a sleeping spot or Awful bed/bedroll, regular stools simply provide too little of a benefit. And if your colonist created an awful bed, chances are that they'll make an awful stool. A legendary stool can mantain a +8 comfort bonus all day. However, even a good armchair provides more comfort, and is significantly more likely to be created.
Cover baiting
Stools have the dubious distinction of providing only 20% cover. While this seems like a purely negative trait, it makes stools very effective at luring raiders into very poor defensive positions to predictably position them without affording them too much of an advantage.
Resource Compression
A niche use for the stool is resource compression for caravaning or using transport pods. A constructed stool has a base mass of 3 kg but can be deconstructed into 12-13 units of its component material (or x10 for small volume materials). As these 12-13 units often weigh more than the 3kg of the stool, more material can be carried for the same mass by keeping it in stool form and deconstructing it at the end of travel, if you are willing to lose some resources to transport more.
- For example, 25 units of steel can be compressed into a 3 kg stool, which then gets deconstructed for at least 6 kg, allowing you to carry at least twice the steel you normally would.
Resource compression has a drawback in that you will lose 50% of the invested resources, 12-13 out of the 25 units of material used. However, when the alternative is abandoning 50% of the material anyway due to weight restrictions, there is no reason not to do so if time permits.
However, due to the increased work to make the stool, as well as rounding losses, the use of Plant pots is typically superior for this purpose.

Styles
This article relates to content added by Ideology (DLC). Please note that it will not be present without the DLC enabled. |
Ideoligions allow the selection of styles which then change the texture of the certain items and buildings when constructed by the colony. These style variants can be crafted if the colony has the selected style, or can be looted from raiders from factions with the requisite style.
