A bed is used by colonists for sleeping to recover their rest.
There is a version for two colonists called the double bed, and a deluxe version known as the royal bed.
Acquisition[edit]
Beds can be constructed once the complex furniture research project has been completed. Each requires 45 Stuff (Metallic/Woody/Stony, 450 for SMVs) and 800 ticks (13.33 secs) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder and the work to build factor and offset of the material.
Beds may also be offered for sale by bulk goods traders or found in faction bases.
Summary[edit]
Beds are a form of sleep furniture. Only one pawn can sleep on one at a time.
Rest Effectiveness[edit]
Rest Effectiveness is a measure how fast a pawn will regain rest. A pawn sleeping in a bed with 125% rest effectiveness would regain rest 25% faster, and thus require 80% of the time to sleep. Stone materials, except jade, only offer 90% of the rest effectiveness of the same quality level.

Comfort[edit]
Comfort is a measure of how high a pawn can refill their comfort meter while using the piece of furniture. A pawn sleeping in a bed with a higher comfort value can achieve a higher level. It does not affect the rate at which comfort increases, only the maximum level. Comfort levels over 100% have no additional effect. Comfort varies by quality but not material. Beds of the same quality level will all have the same comfort, regardless of what they're constructed from. An adjacent end table and a nearby dresser will each increase the base comfort by a further +0.05. This increase is applied before the quality multiplier.
Quality | Awful | Poor | Normal | Good | Excellent | Masterwork | Legendary |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Comfort | 57% | 66% | 75% | 84% | 93% | 109% | 128% |

+ Dresser | 61% | 70% | 80% | 90% | 99% | 116% | 136% |
+ End Table & Dresser | 65% | 75% | 85% | 95% | 105% | 123% | 145% |
Surgery Success Chance Factor[edit]
The Surgery Success Chance Factor is exactly what it sounds like - a multiplier on the chance for a successful surgery assuming it is performed in this bed. The base value depends on the bed type with most beds and bedrolls having a base value of 100%, then modified by the bed's quality level. Construction material does not matter.
Quality | Awful | Poor | Normal | Good | Excellent | Masterwork | Legendary |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Surgery Success Chance Factor | 90% | 95% | 100% | 105% | 110% | 115% | 130% |
This table assumes the bed is inside a clean, properly lit room. For the full effects of light, cleanliness and placing the bed outside see Surgery Success Chance Factor.
Healing[edit]
A pawn resting in a bed of any quality will have their Immunity Gain Speed multiplied by ×1.07 and heal an additional +8 HP from injuries per day.
Analysis[edit]
Beds are a clear upgrade from sleeping spots and bedrolls; beds are equal or superior in every stat. In most biomes, wood is a common resource, so beds are easy to create.
- Compared to a sleeping spot: a normal quality, wooden bed saves 1 hour of rest every 24 hours. Sleeping spots also incur a negative −4 Slept on the ground moodlet, which beds prevent. A large difference for a small cost.
- While bedrolls aren't much worse, they require a fabric or leather. These materials are difficult to acquire in the first few days of a colony.
- Note that bedrolls also avoid the Slept on the ground moodlet. A bedroll of +1 quality level (good roll vs normal bed) is slightly better than a bed.
This means that Crashlanded pawns should build beds almost immediately, while New Tribes should build beds as soon as they research Complex Furniture.
Comparison[edit]
Compared to the other beds:
- Bedrolls can be brought into a caravan and used while traveling.
- Double beds cost 5 materials less than 2 beds and allow lovers to do lovin'. However, pawns dislike sleeping with someone who is not a spouse or lover.
- Hospital beds are much better for injury, disease recovery, or surgery, though require a fair bit of research first. Outside of medical use, hospital beds are more expensive for little/no gain.
- Royal beds are an expensive upgrade, but offer a better Rest Effectiveness, as well as other stats.
- A bed of +1 quality level is better in terms of Rest. While the royal bed would be better for Comfort, an excellent quality bed reaches the maximum possible comfort (with end table and dresser).
- Typically, it is more efficient to "roll" for the higher quality bed than it is to build a royal bed. See Royal bed#Comparison for details.
