Royal Beds are highly resource-intensive to build, but they really liven up the beauty in a room, and also provide comfort and a slight bonus to the rate at which colonists recover during sleep.
Despite its name, it is part of the base game and not the Royalty DLC. It is however required for some content in that DLC, including keeping Nobles happy.
Acquisition
Royal beds require the Complex furniture research project to be completed in order to be constructed. Each requires 100 Stuff (Metallic/Woody/Stony, 1000 for SMVs), 50 Gold, 50,000 ticks (13.89 mins) of work, and a Construction skill of 8.
Summary
Rest Effectiveness
Rest Effectiveness is a measure how fast a pawn will regain rest. A pawn sleeping in a bed with 125% rest effectiveness would regain rest 25% faster, and thus require 80% of the time to sleep.
Rest effectiveness varies by quality and material. With the notable exception of jade, stone materials only offer 90% of the rest effectiveness of a bed made from non-stone materials at the same quality level. Jade can safely be used to make beds with extremely high beauty and value.

Comfort
Comfort is a measure of how fast a pawn will refill their comfort meter. A pawn sleeping in a bed with a higher comfort value will regain comfort proportionally faster. Comfort varies by quality but not material. Beds of the same quality level will all have the same comfort, regardless of what they're constructed from. An adjacent end table and a nearby dresser will each increase the base comfort by a further +0.05. This increase is applied before the quality multiplier.

Surgery Success Chance Factor
The Surgery Success Chance Factor is exactly what it sounds like - a multiplier on the chance for a successful surgery assuming it is performed in this bed. The base value depends on the bed type with most beds and bedrolls having a base value of 100%, the sleeping spot a lower value of 70%, and the hospital bed a higher value of 110%. This base value is then modified by the bed's quality level. Beds of the same type and quality level will all have the same factor, regardless of what they're constructed from.

Analysis
Royal beds are nice, but their advantages can usually be provided more cheaply and effectively by other means: the beauty by making a sculpture, the rest effectiveness by making several regular beds and rolling for higher quality. Royal beds are practical for noble pawns who need them (i.e. Baron rank and higher), and for when your constructor has a creative inspiration.
Comparison to Ordinary Beds
The direct alternative to the royal bed is either a bed or double bed. All else being equal, the royal bed's rest effectiveness is 1.05x that of the regular beds, and its beauty and wealth are much higher; wealth helps maximize a bedroom's impressiveness, but also attracts raiders.
Beauty is more efficiently obtained with sculptures. The base beauty of a royal bed is 75 for most materials, while one large sculpture has 100, or 135 if it's marble. Large sculptures require an artistic colonist and more work, but are more space efficient and generally less expensive. And if you want to add wealth to your bedroom, you can use silver or even gold tiles. Royal beds of the same quality are superior in comfort, but an excellent normal bed with an end table and dresser is enough to reach 100% comfort, the maximum.
Therefore, the one irreplaceable advantage of royal beds is rest effectiveness. However, you must consider quality. An ordinary bed just 1 quality level is superior for rest effectiveness: a good royal bed has 1.13 rest effectiveness vs. an excellent bed's 1.14, excellent royal bed has 1.20 vs. masterwork bed's 1.25, masterwork royal bed has 1.31 vs. legendary bed's 1.6. Also, the sleep accelerator's bonus adds to the royal bed bonus, but is multiplied by the quality bonus.
For rest efficiency, it may be more efficient to construct a bunch of regular beds, rolling for higher quality and deconstructing the rest. Its often much faster, let alone cheaper, to do so - depending on construction skill.
Practical Examples
A royal bed takes 33x the work of a double bed and 63x that of a single bed, regardless of materials. Counting the price of the gold and wood, the royal bed is 6x more expensive the double bed and 11.4x the single bed. For more expensive materials, the cost ratio is smaller: the royal bed is, compared to double and single, 4.2x and 8x for steel, 2.3x and 4.4x for jade, etc. Using wood, you could construct 11 double beds, deconstruct 10 of them, and spend 1/3 of the work. Usually, this is more than enough to get higher quality. Royal beds are still prettier (and less time than sculptures), but double beds have the advantage of not using gold (which may require active effort to find/buy).
If constructor is level 10, then on average, you need to make 2 royal beds to be "good" or 8 double beds for one to be "excellent" (with a 1/4 chance that the royal bed will be excellent). The royal bed approach costs 2x the materials and 8x the work. At level 13, you can make 3 beds for colonists: 4 royal beds (two are good, one is excellent) or 13 double beds (3 excellent beds, with a 1/5 chance that one is masterwork), for a cost ratio of 2.6x and work ratio of 11x. Substituting steel for wood makes royal beds relatively more appealing, but only by a factor of 1.42x, still less than the cost ratio. However, if your colonists already have excellent normal beds, and your constructor is level 17 or lower, then getting excellent royal beds is cheaper.
If your constructor is a production specialist, then all quality levels are increased by 1. The amazing 1.6 rest effectiveness of legendary beds becomes paramount: going "masterwork bed -> legendary bed" saves 4.5x the colonist waking hours as going "masterwork bed -> masterwork royal bed". Therefore, even if you're using steel, rolling for legendary beds is worthwhile (despite being 3% more expensive per bed than masterwork royal beds at level 20), and doubly worthwhile for single beds. Also, the 2.5x masterwork market price factor makes it worth it to sell spare masterwork beds.
In conclusion, royal beds are usually not practical for most pawns, which should instead be given higher-quality regular beds (single or double) plus sculptures. Royal beds still have an advantage of being "all-in-one", being beautiful and wealthy in lieu of an artist's time, but is still more expensive. Royal beds are appropriate for (a) noble pawns, (b) if your constructor has a creative inspiration, or (c) your constructor is bored, you've hit the quality ceiling on your regular beds, and you have resources to spare.
