Lungs are harvestable human organs that allow a pawn to breathe.
Acquisition
The lung item can be harvested from live humans through surgery. The lung must be perfectly healthy in order to obtain the item. This bill requires 1 of any type of medicine to perform. Success chance is dependent on a number of factors, including bed quality, room cleanliness, and doctor skill - specifically the doctor's Medical Surgery Success Chance. Lungs can be directly harvested, but installing a detoxifier lung will also net an organic lung. Removing both lungs will kill the pawn.
Removing a healthy lung from a guest or prisoner will decrease faction goodwill by 80 points, down to the cap of -100. Removing any organ from anyone depresses the "donor" with -30 mood penalty for 7 days and 7 hours. Other colony members can gain potentially tremendous mood penalties, which all stack:
- −5 for "Someone's organ harvested" (any organ); −6 if colonist was harvested
- −6 for "Someone organ-murdered" (if fatal)
- −5 for "Witnessed ally's death" (if fatal and on colonist)
- −4 for "Observed Corpse" (if fatal)
Pawns with the Bloodlust or Psychopath traits, or those with an Ideoligion with Organ Use: Acceptable are not affected by the harvesting of other people. Other Ideologion precepts may change moodlets for harvest and organ use.
Lungs can also be acquired through trading with faction settlements or Exotic Goods traders.
Summary
A pawn requires 1 lung to live. Each lung contributes towards 50% of a pawn's Breathing, so losing a lung results in 50% Breathing. Breathing itself affects Consciousness, Moving, and the Rest Rate Multiplier. A completely removed lung would result in -10% Consciousness, -15% to sleep efficiency, and -20% Moving; Consciousness also reduces a variety of other stats.
The tissue of the lungs can be affected by asthma, commonly related to age, smoking, or exposure to harmful substances.
Installation
Installing the part requires 2,500 ticks (41.67 secs) of work, 2x medicine of herbal quality or better, and a Medical skill of 5.
Removing the part requires 2,000 ticks (33.33 secs) of work, 1x medicine of herbal quality or better, and has no Medical skill requirements.
If the operation fails, the part has a chance[What Chance?] to be destroyed.
Analysis
Lungs contribute a substantial amount to a pawn's effectiveness. If one is destroyed, you should aim to replace it as quickly as possible. Asthma and permanent injury are less pressing concerns, but are often worth the penalty for organ harvesting. Harvest a lung from a prisoner, or alternatively a guest or worthless colonist (before abandoning them).
A lung is worth 1,000, as opposed to a kidney's 900. Lungs also reduce pawn capacity much more than a kidney. A lost kidney reduces Consciousness by 5% and Immunity Gain Speed by 25%.
While worth less than a heart or liver, a pawn can live with 1 lung and 1 kidney harvested. If the mood penalties don't concern you (or don't exist due to Ideoligion), you can harvest 1 lung, 1 kidney, and 1 heart/liver before you kill a pawn. If you harvest a lung and kidney, you can then donate the prisoner to a royal tribute collector for the same amount of honor as a healthy pawn.
