A bionic tongue acts as a replacement for a removed tongue. It has 100% part efficiency, perfectly replacing but not exceeding the capabilities of a natural tongue.

Acquisition[edit]

Bionic tongues can be crafted at a fabrication bench once the Bionic replacements research project has been completed. Each requires Plasteel 8 Plasteel, Advanced component 2 Advanced components, 26,000 ticks (7.22 mins) of work modified by the general labor speed of the crafter, and a crafting skill of 8.
Bionic tongues can be bought from the following traders: Orbital exotic goods trader, Outlander base trader, Outlander exotic goods trader, Slave ship.

They can also be bought from traders.[Which?][Quest rewards?]

Summary[edit]

Bionic tongues fully replace an organic tongue. Without a tongue, pawns have 0% Talking and are unable to:

  • Initiate or respond to relationship requests, become lovers, or propose marriage.
  • Engage in conversations, good or bad.
    • Rebuff or be rebuffed by others.
    • Trigger social fights by insulting others.
    • Increase opinion of an existing romantic partner.
  • Try to convert others to their ideoligion.Content added by the Ideology DLC
  • (to be checked): Issue role commands.Content added by the Ideology DLC

In addition, a pawn without a tongue is considered disfigured, giving −15 opinion from others. They will also have a −8 Missing Tongue mood until the tongue is replaced.

Installing dentures or a bionic jaw will also replace a missing tongue, as well as removing any previously installed bionic tongues upon installation. It is impossible to install a bionic tongue on a colonist with a bionic jaw.

Installation[edit]

Installing the part requires 2,500 ticks (41.67 secs) of work, 2x medicine of herbal quality or better, and a Medical skill of 5.

Removing the part requires 2,000 ticks (33.33 secs) of work, 1x medicine of herbal quality or better, and has no Medical skill requirements.

If the operation fails, the part will be destroyed.

Analysis[edit]

As a bionic tongue has the same stats as a regular tongue, installing one on a healthy pawn serves no physical purpose. It can replace a missing tongue, although installing a denture will replace a missing tongue at partial effectiveness and a bionic jaw will replace it at 125% effectiveness. Alternatively, if Ideology DLC is installed, the biosculpter pod's bioregeneration cycle Content added by the Ideology DLC can be used to directly restore the tongue at the cost of Glitterworld medicine 2 instead.

If a pawn's tongue is missing, installing a denture is usually the more cost-effective option. A denture does have a Talking and Eating penalty, but unless that pawn uses the talking stat (wardening, trading, taming), the penalty is small enough to be tolerable. Alternatively, not replacing the tongue will prevent all negative converstations, which can help with traits like Abrasive, but removes relationship penalties. Note that the healer mech serum can heal a missing tongue in place of other ailments, so replacing the tongue may allow healer mech serum to target another condition.

Bionic jaws replace the tongue, offer better Eating and Talking (although no stat benefits from Talking over 100%), and are not much more expensive. Therefore, jaws are a better option for wardens as the extra Talking can help in case of injury.

Body modders and transhumanistsContent added by the Ideology DLC will be happier when using any artificial body part. Among the core RimWorld artificial parts that don't have any downsides, bionic tongues require the fewest advanced components. This should be compared to dentures and cochlear implants, which only gives a penalty to jobs using the Social or Animals skills. With the Royalty DLC, venom fangs,Content added by the Royalty DLC knee spikes,Content added by the Royalty DLC and elbow bladesContent added by the Royalty DLC can provide a similar benefit without requiring advanced components and xenogermsContent added by the Biotech DLC are effectively free, even a purely cosmetic gene will satisfy them.
