Stools are the bottom tier seating, providing less comfort than both dining chairs and armchairs. They require no research, have no crafting skill requirement, are the least time and resource intensive and can be made from stone as well as wood or metals, Thus, they can useful in the early game when resources and time are tight and you may not have the crafters or research to construct better seating options. Additionally, the ability to construct stools out of wood can give them greater utility in wood-poor environments.

They can also be made from stone, as well as wood or metals. They are the first available seating for a New Tribe, can be used as cheap furniture for prison cells, and can see use in wood-poor environment.

If you want the cheapest option for a table, use a stool. Otherwise, stools can be placed in front of production buildings for comfort. But the gain is minimal - even before considering alternatives.

Any stool below Excellent quality will never provide enough comfort for any Comfortable moodlet, only preventing   Uncomfortable.  A pawn resting in a normal bed with any end table and dresser reaches 85% comfort in 1.4 hours of rest. It then takes over 18 hours before reaching Uncomfortable. Pawns can get uncomfortable during extended combat situations. However, assigning pawns to "nap" in the middle of the day prevents discomfort at all, whilst keeping them awake.

Chairs in general are useful for preventing the "Uncomfortable" mood debuff and can even grant mood buffs at good qualities. For pawns with jobs that can done sitting in an chair, a normal quality stool will prevent the uncomfortable debuff (-3) all day, while an excellent quality stool will maintain the "Comfortable" buff (+4) all day. A legendary stool,  with a comfort level of 102% can maintain the +8 bonus all day, however even a good quality armchair is superior in comfort and significantly more likely to be crafted. So while a masterwork or legendary stool may be retained into the midgame, switching or skipping to armchairs or dining chairs as soon as possible is suggested.
+
New Tribes won't have access to beds, end tables / dressers, or dining chairs, so will become uncomfortable faster. But even then, stools can largely be forgone. Unless you're stuck in sleeping spot or Awful bed/bedroll, it is a very small comfort bonus. If your builder created an awful bed, chances are that they'll make an awful stool, too.

Thus, every dining table, recreation item, and production bench that allows sitting should have at least some chair installed on them. Priority should be given to objects in continuous use, such as stoves and research benches, with less used objects such as telescopes and tables changed over last. However, switching from stools to a more comfortable form of seating such as armchairs should be prioritized and by mid-game there should be no need to construct stools for comfort at all.
+
A legendary stool can maintain a Extremely Comfortable moodlet all day. However, even a good armchair provides more comfort, and is significantly more likely to be created.

A niche use for the stool is resource compression for caravaning or using transport pods. A constructed stool has a base mass of 3kg but can be deconstructed into 18 units of its component material, or 180 for small volume materials. As these 18 units often weigh more than the 3kg of the stool, more material can be carried for the same mass by keeping it in stool form and deconstructing it at the end of travel. For example 18 units of steel weighing kg can be compressed into 3 kg of stool, allowing you to carry times the steel you normally would.

A niche use for the stool is resource compression for caravaning or using transport pods. A constructed stool has a base mass of 3 kg, but can be deconstructed into 12-13 units of its component material (or x10 for small volume materials). For example, 25 units of steel can be compressed into a 3 kg stool, which then gets deconstructed for at least kg, allowing you to carry at least twice the steel you normally would. You will lose 50% of the invested resources deconstructing the stool, but, if the alternative is abandoning 50% of the material anyway due to weight restrictions, there is no reason not to do so if time permits.

Resource compression has a drawback in that you will lose 25% of the invested resources - 7 out of the 25 units of material used to construct the stool will be lost. However, when the alternative is abandoning almost 75% of the material anyway due to weight restrictions, there is no reason not to do so if time permits.

A stool is a type of furniture which your colonists can sit on. Stools can be placed at tables and other buildings to be sat on. It is the least comfortable type of seat.

Acquisition[edit]

Stools can be constructed, each requiring Stuff 25 Stuff (Metallic/Woody/Stony, 250 for SMVs) and 450 ticks (7.5 secs) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder and the work to build factor and offset of the material.

Summary[edit]

Stools are a form of seating. You need a seat in order to eat at a table, play at a chess table or poker table, or watch television. While sitting on a stool, comfort increases. They can also be placed in front of most production benches for comfort purposes. The orientation of the stool does not matter for any reason.

Comfort[edit]

Comfort is a measure of how high a pawn can refill their comfort meter while using the piece of furniture. A pawn sitting in a chair with a higher comfort value can achieve a higher level. It does not affect the rate at which comfort increases only the maximum level. Comfort levels over 100% have no additional effect. Comfort varies by quality but not material. Stools of the same quality level will all have the same quality, regardless of what they're constructed from.

  • Analysis[edit]

Stools are the cheapest and least comfortable seating, below dining chairs and armchairs. They require no research or Construction skill to make.

Any stool below Excellent quality will never provide enough comfort for any Comfortable moodlet, only preventing −3 Uncomfortable.

A legendary stool can maintain a +8 Extremely Comfortable moodlet all day. However, even a good armchair provides more comfort, and is significantly more likely to be created.

    Cover baiting[edit]

Stools have the dubious distinction of providing only 20% cover. While this seems like a purely negative trait, it makes stools very effective at luring raiders into very poor defensive positions to predictably position them without affording them too much of an advantage.

    Resource Compression[edit]

A niche use for the stool is resource compression for caravaning or using transport pods. A constructed stool has a base mass of 3 kg, but can be deconstructed into 12-13 units of its component material (or x10 for small volume materials). For example, 25 units of steel can be compressed into a 3 kg stool, which then gets deconstructed for at least 6 kg, allowing you to carry at least twice the steel you normally would. You will lose 50% of the invested resources deconstructing the stool, but, if the alternative is abandoning 50% of the material anyway due to weight restrictions, there is no reason not to do so if time permits.

However, plant pots are even lighter, take less work to create, and do not suffer from rounding losses.
