Bedroll
A simple bed that lays on the floor, usually made of cloth or leather, often lined with fur. It is lightweight and can be rolled up for easy transport, but it is not quite as comfortable as a typical bed. Caravans can use bedrolls while traveling for better sleep.

The bedroll is a furniture item which pawns can sleep in. Bedrolls are portable and can be used by pawns in caravans. Bedrolls provide better comfort and rest effectiveness than a sleeping spot, but are inferior to beds of the same quality. For recovery from injury and Surgery Success Chance Factor, bedrolls are equivalent to beds of the same quality.
Acquisition[edit]
Bedrolls can be constructed, each requiring 40 Stuff (Fabric/Leathery) and 600 ticks (10 secs) of work modified by the construction speed of the builder and the work to build factor and offset of the material. Similar to Beds, Bedrolls are constructed in place, not fabricated separately and then placed.
Summary[edit]
Bedrolls are a form of sleep furniture. One pawn can sleep on one at a time.
Bedrolls, both single and double, function similar to beds in most respects. However, unlike other beds, bedrolls can be carried and used in caravans. When resting, caravan members will automatically use bedrolls in caravan inventory, improving their comfort regeneration, rest efficiency, and healing rates. Quality affects these as normal, even when on caravan. Note however that even if pawns fill their rest bar before dawn, the caravan will not be able to move until first light.
To add bedrolls to a caravan, they cannot be "installed", which is their default upon creation. You must select a bedroll and choose the Uninstall option available for all types of Furniture. It will go into regular storage and be available in the config tab when you are forming the caravan.
Rest Effectiveness[edit]
Rest Effectiveness is a measure how fast a pawn will regain rest. A pawn sleeping in a bed with 125% rest effectiveness would regain rest 25% faster, and thus require 80% of the time to sleep. Rest effectiveness under 100% increases rest time needed.
Rest effectiveness for bedrolls varies by quality.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Rest effectiveness | 82% (12.85 h) |

140% (7.48 h) |
148% (7.09 h) |

Bracketed numbers are in-game hours to refill rest from 0% to 100% at the given rest effectiveness.
Comfort[edit]
Comfort is a measure of how high a pawn can refill their comfort meter while using the piece of furniture. A pawn sleeping in a bed with a higher comfort value can achieve a higher level. It does not affect the rate at which comfort increases only the maximum level. Comfort levels over 100% have no additional effect. Comfort varies by quality but not material. Beds of the same quality level will all have the same comfort, regardless of what they're constructed from. An adjacent end table and a nearby dresser will each increase the base comfort by a further +0.05. This increase is applied before the quality multiplier.
Quality | Awful | Poor | Normal | Good | Excellent | Masterwork | Legendary |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Comfort | 52% | 60% | 68% | 76% | 84% | 99% | 116% |

+ End Table & Dresser | 59% | 69% | 78% | 87% | 97% | 113% | 133% |
Surgery Success Chance Factor[edit]
The Surgery Success Chance Factor is exactly what it sounds like: a multiplier on the chance for a successful surgery assuming it is performed in this bed. The base value depends on the bed type with most beds and bedrolls having a base value of 100%, the sleeping spot a lower value of 70%, and the hospital bed a higher value of 110%. This base value is then modified by the bed's quality level. Beds of the same type and quality level will all have the same factor, regardless of what they're constructed from.
Quality | Awful | Poor | Normal | Good | Excellent | Masterwork | Legendary |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Surgery Success Chance Factor | 90% | 95% | 100% | 105% | 110% | 115% | 130% |
This table assumes the bedroll is inside a clean, properly lit room. For the full effects of light, cleanliness and placing the bedroll outside see Surgery Success Chance Factor.
Healing[edit]
A pawn resting in a bedroll of any quality will have their Immunity Gain Speed multiplied by ×1.05 and heal an additional +8 HP from injuries per day.
Analysis[edit]
The materials chosen to construct the bedroll do not make a "better" bedroll; all textiles are equal regarding any "insulation" values vs. extreme cold or heat. Bedrolls simply provide sleeping bonuses, same as beds. Material choice only affects the market value and hit points of the object, neither of which are typically relevant.
Bedrolls are worse than beds of the same quality for rest and comfort, and better than sleeping spots. They are slightly better than beds made of stone, as well as beds one quality level lower. At the start of the game, textiles are usually harder to obtain than wood; most biomes have plentiful amounts of wood available. Therefore, regular beds should be created when at all possible.
New Tribes need to research Complex Furniture before constructing beds, so will have to rely on bedrolls to increase comfort and avoid the −4 Slept on the ground moodlet[Templatize] until it is complete. Complex Furniture should be one of the first projects to research, though a tribe may want to research Stonecutting or Complex Clothing first, depending on situation and textile availability.
Bedrolls and double bedrolls retain a niche as the only beds that are usable inside a caravan. Pawns will sleep on bedrolls on the world map, which prevents the aforementioned slept on the ground debuff when traveling. It will not reduce the time the caravan spends "resting" on the world map. Any bedroll made prior to adopting beds can be used repurposed for caravaning, however the bonuses must be balanced against the carry weight and loading time.
Bedrolls also have a Path Cost of 14 vs. 42 for beds, which might be a consideration in a crowded Barracks or Prison.
Space[edit]
Another niche is optimizing mood bonuses from small bedrooms. Unlike beds, bedrolls have standable passability, which means they do not reduce room's space stat. As for small rooms, space has by far the biggest impact on impressiveness, player is given the option to sacrifice some rest effectiveness and comfort in favor of a higher mood bonus and/or smaller bedroom size.
At masterwork quality, a bedroll reaches 1.0 comfort with just an end table. As comfort is effectively capped at 1, a masterwork bedroll would have more space than the masterwork bed, and "only" sacrifices rest effectiveness. A room with a bedroll and a dresser will have the same space as a room with a regular bed, which should defy the purpose for most scenarios.
