The gas mask is a piece of apparel added by the Biotech DLC.

Acquisition

Gas masks can be crafted at a Machining table once the Machining research project has been completed. They require Steel 20 Steel, Chemfuel 20 Chemfuel and 6,000 ticks (1.67 mins) of work.

Summary

Gas masks increase Toxic Environment Resistance by +80%, causing tox gas, toxic fallout, rot stink, and pollution to be 20% effective. It does not protect from diseases, which are not contagious between pawns in RimWorld, nor does it prevent toxic buildup from attacks such as the cobra's bite. Quality does not affect this resistance.

The gas mask does not count as clothing for pawns with the nudist trait or with pro-nudity ideoligionsContent added by the Ideology DLC. Despite this, it does still count as clothing coverage for pawns who prefer not being naked

Analysis

For many purposes, such as against rot stink, a face mask's 50% toxic resistance is sufficient. As face masks don't cover the head, simple helmets and flak helmets can be used alongside it.

The gas mask offers virtually no protection to the head. Any attack with at least 1% AP, which includes all melee attacks and all bullets, completely ignore even a legendary gas mask. The only positive effect of quality is a lowered deterioration rate.
