The psychic foil helmet is a piece of headgear that decreases the psychic sensitivity of the wearer, and is primarily useful for protecting an individual pawn against psychic phenomena.
Acquisition[edit]
This item cannot be crafted. It can only purchased through trade, found on raiders, or obtained as a quest reward.
Summary[edit]
A psychic foil helmet reduces a pawn's Psychic Sensitivity by −90%, regardless of quality, reducing the effect of psychic phenomena on the pawn. For further detail about what is affected, see the Psychic Sensitivity page.
Note that this chance is an offset to the stat. For example, a pawn with the psychically hypersensitive trait (+80%) wearing the helmet will have a final sensitivity of 90%, while a psychically dull (−50%) pawn will have a sensitivity 0% them rendering them immune to most psychic effects, including psychic shocks and insanity lances.
Analysis[edit]
The psychic foil helmet is a niche item primarily useful in blunting the mood penalty from psychic drones, particularly on psychically sensitive colonists. The same reduction cuts positive psychic effects, however, including those from psychic emanators and psychic harmonizers. It also offers some protection from psycast
friendly fire, which can help shield melee colonists in the scrum.
Despite being called a helmet, the psychic foil helmet's protection is comparable to that of a bowler hat made of weak materials. It only blocks minimal damage and, with its low HP, doesn't last very long either. Quality does not affect its psychic protection, so an Awful foil helmet blocks psychic effects just as well as a Legendary foil helmet.
Psychic foil helmets can appear on some raiders, making them resistant to some psycasts. If combined with the psychically dull trait, whether they have it naturally or forced by genes,
they will also be immune to psychic lances. It is thus important to check a target's gear before relying on either option.
Psychic foil helmets can be used to intentionally reduce the quality of psychic rituals,
as some rituals have desirable effects at low quality. For example, lowering the quality of draw animals increases the odds of summoning a manhunter pack, which can be exploited to bait and bleed raiders. Watering down chronophagy provides finer control of the invoker and target's final ages, useful for both narrative and mechanical reasons including, but not limited to, maintaining relative ages, preventing valuable targets such as current or future colonists from becoming too old, and maximising the number of pawns that can have their Transhumanist
demands for age reversal satisfied or scars removed with a given target pool and/or without de-aging younger invokers into their teens (and suffering teen stat penalties).
