The array headset is a piece of apparel added by the Biotech DLC that increases the bandwidth of mechanitors.
Acquisition
Array headsets can be crafted at a Machining table once the Standard mechtech research project has been completed. They require 50 Steel, 8 Components, 2,100 ticks (35 secs) of work, and a Crafting skill of 5.
Summary
The array headset increases a mechanitor's bandwidth by +6. This increase is not affected by quality, though the usual apparel stats are affected as normal.
The array headset does not count as clothing for pawns with the nudist trait or with pro-nudity ideoligions. Despite this, it does still count as clothing coverage for pawns who prefer not being naked
Analysis
A strict upgrade to the airwire headset, providing 3 more bandwidth, costing 4 components more to create. The array headset also has a higher research cost, requiring you to defeat a diabolus first.
The mechcommander helmet gives the same, +6 bandwidth, but requires both plasteel and a diabolus' signal chip to create. The benefit of the mechcommander helmet is the protection it gives, roughly equal to a steel flak helmet while giving some amount of bandwidth. It may be more desirable to save the signal chip until you can create a bandwidth pack, which requires 2 chips. The bandwidth pack occupies a different slot, so it can be worn with any helmet. And unlike headsets and helmets, it never deteriorates.
The only stats that are meaningfully affected by quality are the deterioration rate and market value, thus in most cases there is essentially no benefit and some detriment to higher quality headsets. Note that deterioration rate only applies to deterioration from being outdoors and the like, it does not affect the damage taken from attacks or being worn day-to-day. Properly storing any unworn headsets, as you likely are anyway, completely negates the benefit.
