Torture crowns are a form of clothing added by the Ideology DLC. They add pain, for those who want to suffer. Despite being called "crowns", they have no relation to noblesContent added by the Royalty DLC or more traditional crowns. Content added by the Royalty DLC

Acquisition[edit]

Torture crowns can be crafted at a fueled smithy or electric smithy, each requiring Stuff 25 Stuff (Metallic/Woody, 250 for SVMs) and 1,200 ticks (20 secs) of work modified by the general labor speed of the crafter and the work to make factor of the material. Torture crowns can only be crafted if you have the Guilty or Pain Is Virtue memes.[Detail needed]

They can also occasionally be bought from bulk good traders.

Summary[edit]

Wearing a torture crown inflicts +5% pain on the wearer. It does no damage, and the pain will be removed the instant the crown is no longer worn and the amount inflicted is independent of quality or material - all torture crowns will inflict the same amount of pain. With no other sources of pain, this is insufficient to inflict any Consciousness penalties but does inflict a −5/+5/+3 moodlet for normal, masochist, and Pain Idealizing pawns respectively. These thoughts do not stack, with the most positive taking precedent.

Finally, for psycastersContent added by the Royalty DLC, pain also adds a multiplier of 100% + 3 × Pain percentage to Neural Heat Recovery Rate, or ×115% assuming no other sources of pain besides the crown.

Note that the effects of pain on mood and consciousness are not strictly linear, and the values may be different for pawns with other sources of pain. See the Pain article for details.

Analysis[edit]

The obvious and intended use is to provide a mood buff to masochist and Pain Idealizing pawns. The pain inflicted is minor that being closer to the pain shock threshold and a consciousness penalty matter less than the crown being incompatible with a protective helmet. While drop pod raids or infestations mean attacks may occur on short notice, the crown can be easily and quickly swapped out for a protective helmet in most circumstances. Ideally, the crown will only be worn when a pawn requires the mood buff, such as when close to a mental break, with it being kept in storage and replaced by a helmet at other times.

There is some merit to equipping slaves with the crown - while their mood debuff from the pain will make them rebel ever so slightly more often, they will also be slightly easier to safely down as they will be slightly closer to their pain shock threshold.

Psycasters[edit]

Psycasters will also multiply their rate of neural heat recharge by a factor of ×1.15. The fact that this can be removed easily makes this more attractive than other sources of pain. If used in combat, consider pairing it with a shield belt or some cannon fodder as the crown does not provide significant armor, and will often provide none after weapon AP. Even high quality plasteel crowns are not particularly protective - a legendary example offers only 31%, less than a poor steel simple helmet or a normal thrumbofur bowler hat.

If bioferriteContent added by the Anomaly DLC is available as a material for the crown, its psychic effects synergize well with the effects of pawn, providing a higher Neural Heat Recovery Rate than an eltex helmet and almost as much psychic sensitivity for an otherwise unenhanced 6th level psycaster. However, as the effects of both bonuses are multiplicative while those of the eltex are additive, depending on the other bonuses available to a pawn, a bioferrite crown can even outperform an eltex skullcap while being far easier to acquire at high qualities.
