Summary
They can also be purchased via trading or looted from Outlander and Pirate raiders.
Overview & Obtaining
Simple helmets offer cheap (albeit inferior) protection for one's head, but impose a move speed penalty of 0.04 c/s. The main pro of Military Helmets is the cheapness to manufacture and purchase, requiring little more than half of the materials that Advanced Helmets require, and also less than half as expensive when purchased. <br>

They can be purchased via trading, produced at a machining table, or looted from Outlanders and Pirates.

Crafting
Analysis
Simple helmets must be manufactured at a machining table, which in turn requires machining to be researched in order to be constructed. A simple helmet requires 70 metallic materials (i.e. steel, plasteel, uranium, silver, gold) and 100 seconds of work (6,000 ticks) to be created, assuming baseline global work speed and no enhancements or hindrances to consciousness, sight, or manipulation.

Simple helmets are a relatively cheap way to protect the head, a vital part of any pawn. They don't provide much insultation - if temperature is an issue, you may want to wear hats like a cowboy hat or tuque instead. In the early game, or when dealing with large numbers of pawns, the simple helmet provides a decent amount of protection for a small amount of resources.

Usage of different materials does not affect the protection offered, but enhances durability.

Conclusion and Comparison
Comparisons
Simple Helmets are one of the three main headgear protections available in RimWorld (the others being the advanced helmet and power armor helmet), but also the least protective out of the three. While being the least protective, Simple Helmets do have a remarkable lifespan due to the inferior damage absorption, especially if made out of Plasteel. They also impose the greatest movement speed penalty along with power armor helmets, with a 0.04 c/s penalty, whereas advanced helmets only impose a 0.02 c/s penalty. Simple helmets are intermediate in terms of mass with a mass of 2kg, whereas advanced helmets have a mass of 1.2kg and power armor helmets have a mass of 2.7kg.

*A steel simple helmet can beat all but the highest quality war masks, and is on par with an expensive hyperweave veil, beating all other materials.

The simple helmet is the first available headgear that can be crafted from metal.

Acquisition[edit]

Simple helmets can be crafted at a fueled smithy or electric smithy once the smithing research project has been completed. Each requires Stuff 40 Stuff (Metallic, 400 for SMVs) and 3,200 ticks (53.33 secs) of work modified by the general labor speed of the crafter and the work to make factor of the material.

They can also be purchased via trading or looted from Outlander and Pirate raiders.

Analysis[edit]

Simple helmets are a relatively cheap way to protect the head, a vital part of any pawn. They don't provide much insultation - if temperature is an issue, you may want to wear hats like a cowboy hat or tuque instead. In the early game, or when dealing with large numbers of pawns, the simple helmet provides a decent amount of protection for a small amount of resources.

Protection offered by a simple helmet depends on its quality and material. It has a material effect multiplier of 50% for all types of damage.

Comparisons[edit]

  • A steel simple helmet can beat all but the highest quality war masks, and is on par with an expensive hyperweave veil, beating all other materials.
  • A steel flak helmet beats even a plasteel simple helmet. However, flak helmets require components (often in high demand) and plasteel (which may be hard to get early on).

Simple helmets are fairly heavy with a mass of 2kg - tied for the heaviest headpiece with the cataphract helmet Content added by the Royalty DLC. However, this is unlikely to be relevant in most circumstances.

    Version history[edit]

    • Alpha 17 - Renamed from Military helmet to Simple helmet. Received a slight buff to protection and no longer requires components.
    • Beta 19 - it became cheaper, and materials now affect armor rating. It now also protects against heat.
