Acquisition
Simple helmets can be manufactured at a fueled smithy with a crafting skill of at least 5. Requires 40 metallic materials and 3,200 ticks (53.33 secs) of work. Usage of different materials enhances protection offered and durability. Can be purchased via trading or looted from Outlanders and Pirates.
Analysis
Simple Helmets are one of the five main types protective headgear in the base game (the others being the war mask, flak helmet, recon helmet, marine helmet), six if including the Royalty DLC (which also adds cataphract helmet).
They are significant improvement over the war mask in terms of protection - while they don't cover the entire head, many weapons have sufficient AP to nullify the protection of all but the the highest quality war masks. Compared to war veils, only the rare and expensive hyperweave veils are comparable to even basic steel simple helmets in sharp protection (and significantly better in heat protect) - like the masks however, they do protect the entire head as well as providing a higher Pain Shock Threshold. Thus, there may be a niche if spare hyperweave is available or an already crafted example is acquired. Otherwise the simple helmet provides significantly better protection than non-hyperweave veils.
Flak, recon, marine and cataphract helmets all provide superior protection, while the power armor helmets also cover the entire head. However, they are also significantly more expensive, requiring plasteel and either components or, even more expensive, advanced components. Switching to the more protective helmets, especially the full head ones, should generally be done in the late game however in the early game or when dealing with large numbers of pawns when resources are tight, the simple helmet provides a
Simple helmets are fairly heavy with a mass of 2kg - tied for the heaviest helmet with the cataphract helmet . However, this is unlikely to be relevant in most circumstances.
Protection offered by a simple helmet depends on its quality and material. It has a material effect multiplier of 50% for all types of damage.

Version history
- Prior to Alpha 17, it was known as the Military helmet. In Alpha 17, it has been renamed, received a slight buff to protection and no longer required components.
- In Beta 19 it became cheaper, and materials now affect armor rating. It also protects against heat.
