Flak vest

Flak vest

A vest with armor plates inserted on the chest and back. While quite effective at deflecting gunshots and stabbing attacks against the chest, it does nothing to protect the limbs.

The flak vest is a type of armor that protects well against sharp/piercing attacks (e.g. bullets, stabs, cuts, bites), and offer minor protection against blunt attacks, explosions and the ever-present threat of clubs, maces, and wild animals.

Acquisition[edit]

Flak vests can be crafted at a machining table once the flak armor research project has been completed. Each requires Steel 60 Steel, Cloth 30 Cloth, Component 1 Component, 9,000 ticks (2.5 mins) of work modified by the general labor speed of the crafter, and a crafting skill of 4.

They can also be bought from orbital, Outlander, or Empire Content added by the Royalty DLC traders, as well as Outlander and Empire faction bases. Flak Vests are also commonly found on Outlanders, Pirates, Ancients and Imperial Troopers Content added by the Royalty DLC.

Summary[edit]

When equipped, a flak vest reduces the pawn's base move speed by −0.12 c/s. As offsets such as these apply before multiplicative effects such as from Moving capacity, the actual impact on move speed can be larger or smaller than this value. For example, a pawn with 125% Moving would have their speed decreased by −0.15 c/s, while a pawn with only 50% Moving would only have their speed decreased by −0.06 c/s. See Move Speed for details.

Analysis[edit]

Flak vests protect well against Sharp damage, which includes all bullets, at a low cost and at a very small decrease in movement. They are a very cost-effective measure for overall damage mitigation. Because flak vests have much higher armor values than flak jackets and flak pants, and as they protect most of the vital organs, vests should be created first.

Specifically, the vest covers the neck, torso, and the internal organs (heart, liver, lungs, kidneys), which are immediately fatal to lose / lose both of. The only vital organs a vest does not cover are the head and brain, which headgear serves to protect. They also cover the shoulders, protecting artificial arms entirely.

As vests occupy the middle layer, they can be worn with overgarments, like a duster or flak jacket, for even greater protection.

Comparisons[edit]

Despite being much more advanced, the recon armor provides worse Sharp armor than a flak vest alone, only faring slightly better against Blunt. Recon does cover the arms and legs, and has no movement penalty. But, overall, the flak vest with any sort of outerwear is better for raw protection - deaths from limb damage (specifically, from blood loss or lowered consciousness) are considerably rarer than torso shots.

When worn with flak jacket or protective duster (such as one made out of devilstrand or thrumbofur), the flak vest is directly comparable to the marine armor. Marine armor still protects the limbs much better than both flak jacket and any duster.
