Vacsuit helmet

Vacsuit helmet

A helmet that efficiently recycles the user's oxygen, allowing them to breathe in the vacuum of space for hours at a time. The process isn't perfectly efficient, so the user must periodically return to a pressurized environment.

The vacsuit helmet is an item of apparel added by the Odyssey DLC that provides significant vacuum resistance, for use in the vacuum of space. It forms a set with the vacsuit.

Acquisition[edit]

Vacsuit helmets can be crafted at a machining table once the Orbital tech research project has been completed. Each requires Steel 40 Steel, Component 2 Components and 15,000 ticks (4.17 mins) of work modified by the general labor speed of the crafter.

Vacsuit helmets are practically ubiquitous along NPC factions. Most humanoid NPCs like civilians and raiders can spawn wearing them, even if they are otherwise completely unarmored.

Summary[edit]

A vacsuit helmet increases the vacuum resistance of its wearer by +69%. Quality does not affect this resistance.

Vacsuit helmets increase Toxic Environment Resistance by +80%, causing the effects of rot stink and toxic buildup from environmental sources like tox gas, toxic fallout, or pollution to be 20% effective. It also prevents the user from being affected by tox gas exposure. It does not protect from diseases, nor does it prevent toxic buildup from attacks such as the cobra's bite. The helmet's quality does not affect this resistance.

Analysis[edit]

Vacuum use[edit]

The vacsuit and vacsuit helmet set provides a complete +100% Vacuum Resistance, enabling pawns to survive in the vacuum of space until the armor breaks. In addition, the vacsuit set is the cheapest and earliest unlocked set to allow safe orbit travel.

Any power armor helmet will provide better combat protection, but slightly less Vacuum Resistance. Despite not providing complete vacuum immunity (without external support), their vacuum resistance is usually enough to survive extended periods in orbit, especially if there is an oxygenated room available. Even a recon armor and a recon helmet still provides +95% Vacuum Resistance, enabling airless survival for as long as 60,000 ticks (1 in-game day). Better helmets or a vacsuit will improve the safety time further, with a cataphract helmetContent added by the Royalty DLC + vacsuit even providing 100% resistance. Therefore, power armor helmets can be suitable for general use in orbit. However, power armor helmets require more research and are more expensive, so vacsuit helmets can be good before power armor is craftable. In addition, if there is no oxygenated room available, e.g., if using a drop pod or shuttle to enter orbit, then having 100% vacuum immunity is more valuable.

If there is another source of vacuum resistance (the vacskin glandContent added by the Royalty DLC, the Vacuum resistant/Breathless genesContent added by the Biotech DLC), then any of the power armor helmets alone will cause pawns to reach 100% Vacuum Resistance, so the power armor helmets become better cost notwithstanding.

Combat[edit]

The vacsuit helmet is roughly one quality level behind to a steel flak helmet in terms of armor, e.g., a normal vacsuit helmet ≈ a poor steel flak helmet. However, the vacsuit helmet has multiple advantages beyond Vacuum Resistance:

  • The vacsuit helmet is cheaper, not requiring plasteel to create.
  • The vacsuit helmet protects a pawn's eyes, ears, and jaw while the flak helmet doesn't. The eyes are useful body parts, and even the ears are useful as they can take hits in place of the main head.
  • The vacsuit helmet provides great Toxic Environmental resistance and an immunity to tox gasContent added by the Biotech DLC, making them great when fighting waster piratesContent added by the Biotech DLC. Note that the flak helmet can be worn with a face mask for some Toxic Environmental protection, but it doesn't fully prevent the tox gas hediff.

The vacsuit helmet completely outclasses steel simple helmets of the same quality and gas masksContent added by the Biotech DLC, providing more protection and with an identical toxic resistance to the gas mask. Plasteel and uranium simple helmets are more protective, but are prohibitively more expensive. BioferriteContent added by the Anomaly DLC simple helmets are cheaper, still a bit more protective, and boost psycastingContent added by the Royalty DLC, but lack the aforementioned benefits of the vacsuit helmet.

Children[edit]

The vacsuit helmet is one of the better helmets that childrenContent added by the Biotech DLC can wear. For Sharp protection, it is beaten only by high quality material helmets, including:

Both options lack toxic or vacuum resistance, although the kid helmet can be worn with a face mask for some toxic protection.

Regardless, since children have lower HP and should be avoiding combat anyway, upgrading their combat armor is a very low priority. On a child, vacsuit helemts should mainly be considered if going to orbit or the colony is rich enough to easily afford them.
