The flak vest is a type of apparel (armor) that protects well against sharp/piercing attacks (e.g. bullets, stabs, cuts, bites), and offer minor protection against blunt attacks, explosions and the ever-present threat of clubs, maces, and wild animals. They also reduce movement speed by 0.12. The vest protects torso, neck and shoulders. Flak vests can be purchased from traders, manufactured, or stripped from Outlanders and Pirates. Flak vests are typically encountered after the third or fourth raid, depending on difficulty and wealth (this assumes Rough and Crashlanded scenario, so somewhat 'standard' wealth).

Flak Vests can be commonly found on Outlanders, Pirates, Imperial Troopers and Ancients. A flak vest requires 60 steel, 30 cloth, 1 component, and 334 seconds of work (20,000 ticks) to be created, assuming baseline global work speed and no enhancements or hindrances to consciousness, sight, or manipulation.

Flak vests provide good protection for a very small decrease in movement. Protecting the heart and lungs and liver can be game-changing. They offer slightly inferior protection, and vastly inferior coverage compared to marine armor, but are also significantly cheaper to produce and purchase. They also only occupy the middle layer, meaning that overgarments such as dusters may be worn over the top, whereas marine armor occupies both the middle and shell layers so they cannot be worn with the armor. The Flak vest can be worn together with a flak jacket, so you do not have to choose one or the other.

The flak vest is a type of armor that protects well against sharp/piercing attacks (e.g. bullets, stabs, cuts, bites), and offer minor protection against blunt attacks, explosions and the ever-present threat of clubs, maces, and wild animals.

Acquisition[edit]

Flak vests can be crafted at a machining table once the Flak armor research project has been completed. Each requires Steel 60 Steel, Cloth 30 Cloth, Component 1 Component, 9,000 ticks (2.5 mins) of work modified by the general labor speed of the crafter, and a crafting skill of 4.

They can also be bought from orbital, Outlander, or Empire Content added by the Royalty DLC traders, as well as Outlander and Empire faction bases. Flak vests are also commonly found on Outlanders, Pirates, Ancients and Imperial Troopers Content added by the Royalty DLC.

Summary[edit]

When equipped, a flak vest reduces the pawn's base move speed by −0.12 c/s. As offsets such as these apply before multiplicative effects such as from Moving capacity, the actual impact on move speed can be larger or smaller than this value. For example, a pawn with 125% Moving would have their speed decreased by −0.15 c/s, while a pawn with only 50% Moving would only have their speed decreased by −0.06 c/s. See Move Speed for details.

Analysis[edit]

Flak vests protect well against Sharp damage, which includes all bullets, at a low cost and at a very small decrease in movement. They are a very cost-effective measure for overall damage mitigation. Because flak vests have much higher armor values than flak jackets and flak pants, and as they protect most of the vital organs, vests should be prioritized over other armor items.

Specifically, the vest covers the neck, torso, and the internal organs (heart, liver, lungs, kidneys), which are immediately fatal to lose / lose both of. The only vital organs a vest does not cover are the head and brain, which headgear serves to protect. They also cover the shoulders, protecting artificial arms entirely.

As vests occupy the middle layer, they can be worn with overgarments, allowing excellent flexibility while still providing competitive protection. It can be combined with dusters or flak jackets for even greater protection, dusters or parkas for insulation, eltex robesContent added by the Royalty DLC for psycasters,Content added by the Royalty DLC slave body strapsContent added by the Ideology DLC for slaves,Content added by the Ideology DLC lab coatsContent added by the Anomaly DLC for researchers, or heavy bandoliersContent added by the Biotech DLC for a significant ranged DPS increase.

Comparisons[edit]

Despite being nominally more advanced, the recon armor provides worse Sharp armor than a flak vest alone, only faring slightly better against Blunt. Recon does cover the arms and legs, and has no movement penalty. But, overall, the flak vest with any sort of outerwear is better for raw protection - deaths from limb damage (specifically, from blood loss or lowered consciousness) are considerably rarer than torso shots.

When worn with flak jacket or duster made from a protective textile such as devilstrand, thrumbofur, or hyperweave the flak vest is competitive with marine and cataphract armor and their variants. Marine and cataphract tier armors still protect the limbs much better than any overgarment, but this comes at a significantly higher resource, research, and move speed cost. If the research and advanced components used for the power armors is instead put into making bionic arms, then this gap closes significantly as only the legs are less protected and the augmented pawns are more useful outside of combat as well. Meanwhile the low cost of flak vests and dusters allow for many of them to be crafted to in the hopes of getting a higher quality than is obtainable with power armor, they're cheaper to replace, and can be brought online much faster.

Flak vests can thus be an effective armor choice all the way through the end game.
