Sun lamp compression
You can compress steel for loading into caravans, by building a lot of sun lamps. Each sun lamp is only 4.5kg, but can be deconstructed into 30 steel for 15 kg, meaning that it can fit over 3 times the weight of steel in it.
This does mean that you will lose 25% of the steel you use, but overall it's a worthy tradeoff.
