The top hat is a clothing item added in the Royalty DLC. They provide a +20% increase to Social Impact, and meet the headwear requirements of male nobles between Acolyte and Praetor rank.
It is the male equivalent of the Ladies hat.
Acquisition
As a complicated garment, Top Hats can only be made at tailor benches, which requires Noble Apparel to be researched in order to be constructed. A Top hat requires 50 of any textile, and 6,000 ticks (1.67 mins) of work.
It can also be found on Imperial Nobles, for sale at traders and as a quest reward.
Summary
Top hats offers a 20% increase to Social Impact. Note that social impact only affects the impact of social interactions, speech success chances, and some ritual success chances. It does not affect trade prices nor prisoner recruitment, as they are instead controlled by the Trade Price Improvement and Negotiation Ability stats respectively.
To consider themselves properly dressed and avoid a -4 "Want <TITLE>-specific apparel" moodlet, nobles between the ranks of Acolyte and Praetor must wear a top hat or one of the following alternative pieces of headwear:
- Beret
- Eltex helmet
- Eltex skullcap
- Ladies hat
- Prestige cataphract helmet
- Prestige marine helmet
- Prestige recon helmet
Note that female nobles will receive a -5 "Wearing male apparel" mood debuff from wearing a top hat, while male nobles will recieve the same penalty for wearing a ladies hat.
